Smilin Singin Sam, who finished 10th in the Kentucky Derby, might join the field for the 119th Preakness Stakes.

Pimlico vice president of racing Lenny Hale said yesterday he had been contacted by the horse's owner, Cot Campbell of Dogwood Stable, about the possibility of his horse running in Saturday's race.

"The horse will work Monday and then they'll give us a call," said Hale.

If Smilin Singin Sam and Looming -- also a potential starter -- run, the Preakness field would be 13, the second-biggest since 1981. In 1992, there were 14 in the race.

A number of contenders worked out or galloped here yesterday.

Derby winner Go For Gin continued a routine of morning gallops. "The horse has been going to the track every day," said trainer Nick Zito. "We may work him on Monday but we'll wait and see. We're just trying to keep him relaxed."

Blumin Affair, who finished third in the Derby, galloped 1 1/2 miles and will have a tougher gallop today.

Kandaly also galloped and showed a liking for the Pimlico strip, according to owner Ron Lamarque.
