WILMINGTON, Del. -- Meg Mallon will be bidding for her seventh tour title and second LPGA Championship when the 40th annual event concludes today at the Du Pont Country Club.
Mallon opened with par rounds of 71-71 and such was the ebb and flow of players around her that she went from a tie for 10th, three strokes behind the first-round leaders, to a tie for fourth, two shots back.
Yesterday, she used a 2-under-par 69 -- there were only three lower scores -- to jump into a share of the lead with Laura Davies.
Mallon's last tournament victory was the 1993 Sara Lee Classic in Nashville, Tenn., and she almost repeated last week. In the past, she had won from in front, from behind, and in a playoff.
In her most recent effort, she and Davies opened 65-70 and at the finish Davies won by a stroke. Mallon failed to force a playoff when she missed a six-foot putt on the last hole.
Of playing with Davies in the final pairing for the second straight Sunday, Mallon said, "Last week, we matched birdies. We can't do that this time. We are going to have to stick to our own games. She hits it a long way. You still have to get it in the hole."
Mallon is in her best position in eight appearances at the Du Pont Country Club. "The conditions were tougher, but I'm playing better," she said.
