25 Years Ago (Week of May 4-10, 1969):

* Area property owners objected to the county's plans for a 75-acre park around Cat Rocks Run, an area running roughly between Old Columbia Pike and U.S. 29. The proposed park would have taken property and water rights from private citizens. The plan was later scrapped.

* It was announced that a one-year course in African-American culture would be offered as an elective at Atholton High School in September. This would be the first course of its kind in any of the county's four high schools. The idea originated with the school's Human Relations Committee.

50 Years Ago (Week of May 7-13, 1944):

* Ellicott City High School was the site where competitive examinations for college scholarships were given. Eligible young men vied for scholarships to Western Maryland College, Washington College and St. John's College.
