Palmeiro gives Red Wings fans look at his power

THE BALTIMORE SUN

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Rafael Palmeiro hit a three-run home run estimated at 440 feet off the warehouse beyond the center-field fence to highlight the Orioles' 8-7 exhibition victory over the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings last night.

Recent call-up Mark Smith went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run against his old teammates.

Rochester's Sherman Obando played to his all-hit, little-field scouting report. He went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double and a single. He also badly misplayed a ball in right field.

Obando is hitting .362 with eight doubles, three triples, five home runs and 12 RBIs for Rochester.

Smith, a better fielder, got the call over Obando.

"It hurts," said Obando, who was with the Orioles all of last season, in keeping with his status as a 1992 Rule V draft selection. "You work so hard and do so well and someone else gets called up. All you can do is wish him luck and hope he does well. I'm not bitter. I'm happy to be playing every day."
