A 22-year-old Annapolis man was sentenced yesterday to 12 years in prison for shooting a man in the mouth during an argument in Meade Village last year.

Eugene A. Washington of the 200 block of Parker Ave. pleaded guilty to assault with intent to murder Gary Bruce, 20, of Glen Burnie.

William Mulford, assistant state's attorney, said there had been an argument the evening of March 5 during a sports event at Meade High School. Afterward, Washington drove up to a crowd in the 1700 block of Meade Village Circle.

Washington got out of his car and fired three shots. One bullet struck Mr. Bruce in the mouth. The .25-caliber bullet shattered one of Mr. Bruce's lower teeth, split his tongue and lodged in his spine, Mr. Mulford said.

The victim is able to walk, but the bullet remains in his spine, Mr. Mulford said.

Washington was arrested after witnesses at the scene and in his car identified him, Mr. Mulford said.

Judge Raymond G. Thieme Jr. ordered the sentence to run concurrent with the 20-year prison term he received last month for shooting at a man in February 1993.

A jury convicted Washington of attempted murder for shooting at Darryl Z. Neal, a 36-year-old contractor, during an argument in Annapolis.
