Papier-mache from Kashmir, India. Cloisonne, jade, cinnabar, porcelain jewelry and paper cuttings from China. Wooden folk toys and art from El Salvador. Sweaters and jewelry from Chile. These items and more will be sold Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the fourth annual International Festival on the Brethren Service Center grounds in New Windsor.
More than 20 countries will be represented through crafts, food and entertainment.
Banana milkshakes, kettle fried chicken, fried plantains, ginger beer, mutton sloppy joes and piroshkis are just a few of the scrumptious foods that will be sold at the food booths.
A new group to the festival, the Val Tam Kindersingers, will open the event. Puro Peru will return this year to perform lively Peruvian songs and dances, and the Trinidad and Tobago Baltimore Steel Drum Orchestra will perform. Sheila McKenzie will perform songs and dances of ethnic America.
In keeping with this year's "Children Around the World" theme, a collage of "Peace Art" will highlight children's activities. Kids will draw pictures of what they think peace should be, and the pictures will be posted on a wall to form one big work of art.
There also will be storytellers, goat milking, wagon rides, brick making, face painting, sign language instruction, craft times and live animals. The Berenstain Bears also will visit.
An international pen pal booth will be available to anyone who wishes to make new friends in foreign lands.
Local ham radio operators will contact Central and South American operators.
Between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., prizes will be awarded to six winners of a recent children's contest held by the Brethren Center. Carroll County middle school children in public, private and home schools were asked to picture themselves as residents of a Central or South American country.
The winners will each receive a two-day trip in June to Washington.
