Softball
* 10-12 girls -- The Cape St. Claire Cougars opened their season last week by defeating Crofton Black and Crofton Red before losing to Crofton White.
Tiffany Limbacher and Suzie Shuttleworth combined for 12 strikeouts as the Cape beat Crofton Black in their opener, 13-9.
Second baseman Christy Smith doubled and scored three runs for the Cougars and Stephanie Hardy reached base four times. Sarah Krichak drove in three runs.
Limbacher and Shuttleworth combined for 13 strikeouts in a 23-16 victory over Crofton Red. Shuttleworth helped her own cause by going 5-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Debbie Anderson went 4-for-4, Limbacher was 5-for-6 and Lisa Conti went 4-for-5.
Carin Yost came up big on defense for the Cape when she ran down a fly ball in right field with runners in scoring position.
Limbacher struck out nine Crofton White hitters but it wasn't enough as the Cape lost, 13-8.
Tiffany and Lisa Conti each had two hits in the losing effort, with Lisa knocking in three runs. Colleen Dugan played well at second base and Christy Smith was consistent in center field.
The Cape St. Claire Cruisers rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 19-18 victory over Crofton Black. The win raised the Cruisers' record to 4-0 heading into next Tuesday's matchup with Crofton Red.
The Cruisers scored five runs in the fourth inning to break a 6-6 tie with big hits coming from MaryAnn Conrad and Nicole Nichols.
Cape St. Claire added four more runs in the fifth inning to take a 15-9 lead. Stacey Smith, Minka Early, Lisa McElwain and Afton Solis each drove in a run.
Crofton erupted for nine runs in its half of the six inning to claim an 18-15 lead. During that inning, Liz Eatman, Katie Novotny, Jennifer McLurg, Jessica Amy and Shelly Zink all singled for Crofton, which benefited from six walks.
The Cruisers' sixth-inning rally started with walks to Cogar, Smith, Early, Kristen Trudeau and Lisa Hall. Then, with two outs, Solis beat out an infield hit to tie the score. Meghan Curley followed with a bases-loaded walk that scored the winning run.
* 10-and-under girls -- The Linthicum-Ferndale Fillies evened their record at 4-4 by defeating the Severna Park Magic last week, 17-4.
The Fillies were led by the hitting of Lindsey Thompson, Rachel Reid, Jenny White and Jenny Anarino. Each went 3-for-4 while driving in a combined 11 runs.
Thompson and Brooke Nowell shared pitching duties for the Fillies and received excellent support from catchers Elizabeth Brady and Stacy Campbell.
On Tuesday, the Linthicum-Ferndale Sidekicks (6-0) defeated the Severn Athletic Club Slingshots, 11-6.
The Sidekicks were led by solid pitching from Kristen Shay and Tiffany Flowers, who combined for 14 strikeouts. The hitting attack was paced by Kelly Sinnen, Christina Klemkowski and Mary Notari, who had a two-run double.
Brittany White and Renee Pineda shared time on the mound for the Slingshots and combined for four strikeouts. Pineda added a three-run homer, and Ashley Snyder and Jessica Hendricks both had success at the plate.
* 8-10 girls -- The Linthicum-Ferndale Northstars, a select girls softball team, fell to 0-2 last week after losing to Harundale, 20-6.
The Northstars got a strong pitching effort from Melissa Gunther (three strikeouts) but couldn't match up with Harundale offensively.
Amy Brocious scored twice for Linthicum-Ferndale and Kristy Boss, Jamie Thurston Kelly Sinnen and Kelly Taylor each scored once.
Kristen Marll and Crystal Williams combined for 12 strikeouts while no-hitting the Northstars. Harundale (1-1) got key extra-base hits from Becky Koelbel, Jessica Saunders and Ashley Juergens.
* Senior league -- In Tuesday league action, Betty & Jakes (7-3) swept a doubleheader from Arthur's (1-5) by winning 14-7 and 17-5.
In the first game, Jim Bean was 3-for-3 with three triples and Teddy Stallings was 3-for-4.
Fran Pilarsk went 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the second game and Herb Saffield was the winning pitcher. Ernie Lear went 2-for-3 for Arthur's.
Top of the Hill (8-2) beat the Chesapeake Classics (2-8) in a doubleheader, 26-14 and 2-0. Thurlow Carey had two home runs, Sparky Gaunter went 5-for-5 and Bill Nalley went 4-for-4 to lead the way for the victors.
Corrigan's (7-1) beat Last Chance (1-7) in their doubleheader, 13-1 and 21-2.
Art Ehlers went 7-for-7 and Joe Krondon was the winning pitcher in the first game.
Wooden Nickel took two from Thompson Legends, 14-2 and 28-0.
Gary Fitzgerald went 3-for-4 in the first game and Bill Lovelace went 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Jay Solomon paced Wooden Nickel in the second game by going 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Howie Becraft knocked in six runs for Wooden Nickel in the two games.
In Thursday league play, Top of the Hill won two games against Spindler's, 18-6 and 18-9.
Bob Poling went 7-for-9 in the two contests and Thurlow Carey hit two home runs and knocked in five runs. Eddie Horstkamp was 5-for-8.
The Wooden Nickel took two from the Greyhounds, 28-9 and 14-1. Hal Greer was 4-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs and Howie Becraft got the win.
Soccer
* Under-13 boys -- The Severna Park Sting bounced back from four straight losses by notching a 1-0 victory over the Braddock Road Kingfishers in National Capital Soccer League Division I action last weekend.
The Sting (2-4) got on the scoreboard first when Paul Harris sent a pass to Jon Shedlosky who sent a crossing pass in front of the goal. Greg Wojtech saw it coming and headed it into the left corner.
Severna Park goalkeeper Reb Beatty preserved the win when he jumped high to deflect a Kingfisher shot over the crossbar. Sting coach Mike Mooney praised his team's overall passing game and singled out the efforts of Bert Johnson, Brandon Korink, Jon Shedlosky and Sean McGarry.
* Under-19 girls -- The Severna Park Alliance advanced to the semifinals of the Under-19 Maryland State Cup by virtue of a forfeit victory over the Montgomery Soccer Inc. Invaders last Saturday. The semifinals will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday at Benfield Elementary School.
On Sunday, the Alliance (3-2-1) suffered a 3-1 loss to the Gunston Virginian Classics in Washington Area Girls Soccer League action.
Shelley Seivert gave the Alliance the lead with a goal that resulted from a direct kick. Gunston scored soon after and the game was tied 1-1 at the half.
Severna Park goalie Erin Hon couldn't stop the Classics from scoring two unanswered goals in the second half but she did finish with 21 saves.
* Under-12 boys -- The Arundel Soccer Association Strike Force raised its record to 6-0 with a 5-1 win last Sunday over Arthur Slade.
Chris Osborn led the way for the Strike Force with three goals and Nick Haramis and Ricky Swain rounded out the scoring with one apiece.
Patrick Whitmire was credited with an assist and Joey Rogers and Peter Gaither were cited for their offensive support.
* Under-10 boys -- The Arundel Soccer Association Thunderbirds played Crofton to a scoreless tie in AAYSL action last Sunday.
Despite coming up empty in the scoring column, the Thunderbirds (1-1-4) received outstanding performances from Robbie Urick, Kristian Edwards, David Oaks and Craig Maley.
* Under-14 girls -- The ASA Jets downed Cape St. Claire, 1-0, last Sunday.
Lindsey Stapleton provided the game's only goal on an assist from Abria Queen. Other standouts for the Jets included Julia Hoffman, Erin Hartman and Lydia Briers.
Lacrosse
* Juniors -- The Severna Park Green Hornet Junior A's racked up two more victories last week in home games against Crofton (13-4) and the GARCI Orangemen (14-7).
Severna Park midfielder Ryan Metzbower led the Hornets in scoring against the Orangemen with four goals. Attackman Mike Kubas had a hat trick for the Hornets and Josh Cornett and Bert Whitelock added two goals each.
Jon Lehman and Mike Burke each scored once for the winners and goalie Charles Robinson registered 12 saves.
In Sunday's matchup with Crofton, Severna Park attackman Ryan Miller led the way with five goals and Lehmann and Kubas each had two.
Credited with one goal each were Whitelock, Cornett, Metzbower, Burke and Justin Miller. Robinson came through with seven saves.
Running
Daniel Showlund and Julie Bailey crossed the finish line first in Crofton Running Club's Two-Miler last month.
Showlund, a Glendale resident, finished in 11 minutes, 13 seconds to outlast runner-up Christopher Kennedy of Bowie. Bailey of Bowie won the women's two-mile title in a time of 13:05 and Regina Powell of Bowie was second.
Terry Shaner of Fort Meade and Susan Briers of Gambrills were the winners in the five-mile race. Shaner finished in 28:29 and Briers in 38:07. Taking second in the five-mile event were Ed Marcini of Laurel and Susan Bright of Gambrills.
The first three finishers by age class for the men in the two-miler were: 8-12 -- Erich Sisulak, J.J. Wetzel, Barry Allen; 13-19 -- Donny McMahon, Jason Case, Chris Townson; 20-55 -- Ron Bowles, Peter Salmon-Cox and Charles Case.
The top three finishers by age class for women in the two-miler were: 9-19 -- Sarah Kaufman, Grace Wetzel, Doris Cronk; 20-41 -- Mary Sisulak, Wendy VanNest and Barbara Werre.
Baseball
* 13-and-under boys -- The Gambrills Athletic Club A's upped their record to 10-1 with a 4-2 win last Sunday over the Crofton Cardinals.
Austin Decker pitched a no-hitter for the Athletics, as he struck out 15 and walked four in seven innings. Shortstop Norris Roy led the way offensively by going 3-for-3 and driving in a run.
Center fielder Billy Little knocked in two runs for the A's and third baseman Matt Shepard went 2-for-3. Others recording hits for Gambrills were Doug Sherry, Tim Hecker, Jason Heffernan and Ryan Frostbutter.
