Gary G. Ulrich, worked for charities

Gary G. Ulrich, chief executive officer of the Orton Dyslexia Society and a fund-raiser for charitable causes, died May 1 of cancer at St. Joseph Hospital. He was 46.

He had been CEO of the society since 1992, and he had operated Gary G. Ulrich Associates, a fund-raising firm, since 1990.

Cindy Scruggs, director of special projects for Orton, said, "He made such lasting contributions to the society. He wiped out our deficit and made us financially stable. He touched so many lives on a personal basis -- you couldn't know him without loving him."

From 1987 to 1992, Mr. Ulrich was director of development for United Cerebral Palsy of Central Maryland.

"He was a person who raised money because he cared about what he was raising it for. He was a very compassionate person," said Pat Sandusky, former director of United Cerebral Palsy of Central Maryland.

In 1980, Mr. Ulrich established a clinic for muscular dystrophy patients at Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore. In 1973, he organized a summer camp for handicapped children at Camp Maria in Leonardtown, St. Mary's County. He had been chairman of the Maryland Combined Health Appeal and chairman of the board of the National Health Agency combined federal campaign.

He was born and reared in Stoneleigh and was a 1967 graduate of Boys' Latin School.

He graduated from the University of Baltimore in 1971 with a degree in psychology and began his career as coordinator, and later district director, of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He was studying for his master's degree at Loyola College at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, the former Gretchen Walters; a son, Timothy Ulrich; and a daughter, Kelly Ulrich, all of Phoenix, Md.; and his mother, Marie Ulrich of Catonsville.

Memorial donations may be made to the Orton Dyslexia Society, 8600 LaSalle Road, 382 Chester Building, Towson 21286-2044.

A memorial service was held May 5 at Our Lady of the Angels Chapel in Catonsville.
