The Baltimore CFL Colts have filed a legal response in Baltimore and Indianapolis to two NFL motions in the battle over trademark rights to the Colts' name, owner Jim Speros said.

Speros declined to discuss the two responses, which were filed Friday, and his attorney, George Pappas of Venable, Baetjer and Howard, was unavailable yesterday.

On March 1, Speros filed suit in federal court in Baltimore seeking use of the name by his Canadian Football League team.

On April 29, the NFL answered Speros with a request for dismissal in Baltimore and a civil suit in federal court in Indianapolis seeking an injunction and unspecified damages for trademark infringement.

"The NFL is making a big mistake," Speros said, again expressing optimism he will keep the name.

The NFL's request for dismissal in Baltimore was filed by George Beall, an attorney for the Baltimore office of the Hogan & Hartson firm.

No hearing date has been set for Speros' suit, which is to be heard in Baltimore.

In other CFL developments:

* Speros said he still believes he'll receive state funds from Gov. William Donald Schaefer for renovation of Memorial Stadium. Schaefer is expected to decide this week.

* Speros said he'll make a decision shortly on a training camp site for the team. At Speros' invitation, Towson State has entered the picture and is contending with UMBC as preseason host for the Colts. Training camp is scheduled to start later this month.
