25 Years Ago (Week of April 27-May 3, 1969):

* Two men were arrested in Ellicott City after a hold-up at the Fraternity Federal Savings and Loan in the Normandy Shopping Center. A plainclothes Howard County police officer observed a man running from the savings and loan, and alerted police headquarters.

* Prominent Howard County resident Kingdon Gould Jr. was named ambassador to Luxembourg by President Richard M. Nixon. Mr. Gould was the grandson of financier Jay Gould, as well as the founder of the Glenelg Country School.

50 Years Ago (Week of April 30-May 6, 1944):

* Brendel's Manor Park, located on Frederick Road west of Ellicott City, opened for the season with a gala show featuring Happy Johnny and a variety of entertainment. Admission to the park was 50 cents, plus tax.
