Gymnastics Perna Gymnastics played host to the Maryland State Level 5 Championships at Westminster High School April 23-24.

Eight Perna gymnasts competed in the states. Claire Tull scored 7.55 in vault, 7.95 on parallel bars, 8.425 on balance beam, 8.75 in floor exercise and 32.675 all-around.

Brittany Traeger had 7.60 in vault, 8.45 on bars, 7.775 on beam, 9.00 on floor (10th) and 32.825 all-around.

Megan Newman scored 8.40 on vault, 8.15 on bars, 8.125 on beam, 7.55 on floor and 32.225 all-around. Lindsay Winter scored 6.70 in vault, 8.10 on bars, 8.075 on beam, 6.55 on floor and 29.425 all-around.

Katie Mechalske scored 8.80 in vault (tied for eighth), 8.075 on bars, 7.975 on beam, 7.20 on floor and 32.050 all-around. Kadie Thomas scored 6.20 in vault, 8.10 on bars, 8.35 on beam, 7.40 on floor and 30.05 all-around.

Erin Hiner was 7.00 in vault, 6.35 on bars, 8.125 on beam, 7.925 on floor and 29.40 all-around. Holly Baust had 6.30 in vault, 8.10 on bars, 7.975 on beam, 7.30 on floor and 29.675 all-around.

Perna's Level 9 team competed in the regionals in Salisbury on April 24.

Kristen Totten scored 8.85 in vault, 7.70 on bars, 8.60 on beam, 9.125 on floor (seventh) and 34.275 all-around. Shannon Wright had 8.60 in vault, 8.725 on bars, 8.40 on beam, 8.05 on floor and 33.775 all-around.

Finksburg Youth Baseball * Major leagues -- The Rangers scored four runs in the fourth inning to overcame a 6-4 deficit, then erupted for eight in the fifth, to roll past the Pirates, 17-7.

Brett Kinnamon's three-run double keyed the Rangers' third. Kinnamon was 3-for-4.

Sammy Hughes's two-run single was a key hit in the fifth. Craig Gagnon finished the game for the Rangers, pitching two scoreless innings and striking out five.

Justin Dunn was 2-for-2 for the Pirates, driving in a run and scoring once.

The Rangers (2-0) blanked the Red Sox, 5-0. Gagnon and Danny Towney held the Sox to three hits, striking out 10. Rusty Hauermann and Matt Thompson each drove in a run in the fifth for a 3-0 lead.

The Orioles overcame a 2-1 deficit with a five-run third and went on to top the Braves, 10-4. Ryan Selkeld's two-run single drove in the tying and go-ahead runs. He then stole second, third and home. The Orioles' Bucky Nilson was 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in a run.

The Orioles (3-0) also topped the Athletics, 8-1. They opened with a four-run first, keyed by Josh Charlton's two-run double. Davidson was the starting and winning pitcher, striking out four. He was 2-for-2, scoring twice.

Dan Winters' RBI single scored Russ Evans, who had tripled, for the Athletics' run.

The Athletics jumped to an 8-1 lead and went on to down the

Brewers, 18-8. Evans was the big gun in the A's three-run first, hitting a two-run triple. He added a two-run double and was 3-for-4, scoring three runs and driving in four.

Rob Hutter and Shawn Singer each went 3-for-4; Hutter had three RBIs and scored four runs. Singer scored three runs and drove in two. Jon Waller added a two-run

double. He also was the starting and winning pitcher, striking out seven in four innings and allowing two runs.

The Braves scored five runs in the third inning and beat the Athletics, 8-6. Singer was 2-for-3 and Evans 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Brian Reynolds also drove in a run for the Athletics.

The Red Sox downed the Yankees, 20-10, breaking open a 7-6 game with five runs in the fourth and eight in the fifth. Greg Halstead was 2-for-3, scoring twice for the Sox, and Adam Trice and Ryan Swartz each went 3-for-3 for the winners. Trice scored three runs. The Red Sox's Bryan Larkin went 2-for-2 and scored three runs.

* Minor leagues -- The Padres beat the Mets, 15-4. Kevin Brothers was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and scored a run for the winners. He also was the starting and winning pitcher, going three scoreless innings and striking out eight.

The Padres' Chad Reese had a two-run single, and leadoff hitter Lou Bivona walked three times and scored three runs. Kyle Yingling was 2-for-2 for the Mets; Mike Leizer had a double and a RBI and scored a run for the Mets.

The Padres rallied for three runs in the fourth to nip the Expos, 9-8. Donnie Goodman scored the tying run and Mario Reda the deciding run.

A late spurt by the Giants fell one run short, as the Braves prevailed, 4-3.

Scott Cole's two-run, sixth-inning double tied the game at 2. David Luver tied it 3-3 with a seventh-inning RBI single. The

Braves scored the deciding run in the seventh.

Audrey Clabaugh pitched the first three innings for the Giants, allowing two unearned runs and striking out seven.

The Mets beat the Cubs, 13-1. Starter Jared Imhoff and relievers Philip Serio and Brian Adams held the Cubs to three hits.

Adams' two-run double highlighted a five-run Mets third. Mike Leizer was 2-for-2 with an RBI and three runs scored for the Mets. Imhoff was 2-for-3 and scored twice.

The Royals produced five-run third and fourth innings and blanked the Expos, 16-0. Chris Redding's three-run home run keyed the third, and Adam Auerbach's two-run double was a big hit in the fourth.

Steve Evans, Chad Greensfelder and Jonathan Padafina each went 3-for-3 for the winners. Evans drove in two runs;

Greensfelder and Padafina each drove in three.

The three also excelled on the mound, combining to hold the Expos to four hits and striking out 12. Starter Evans had seven strikeouts in three innings.

The Royals rode five-run first and second innings to beat the Mets, 12-4. Jonathan Padafina's two-run homer was the big blow in the first; Steve Evans' two-run single keyed the second. Chris Redding was 2-for-3 for the Royals; Brent Koerber contributed three RBIs, going 2-for-2.

Evans also was the starter and winner, pitching three scoreless innings and striking out seven.

Andy Unglesbee and Chris Silfee supplied the RBI power to pace the Pirates' 2-1 win over the Braves. Pirates starter Mike Rosier struck out 11 in four scoreless innings.

Unglesbee's three-run single powered a five-run first that keyed an 11-2 Pirates win over the Cubs. Max McGee was 2-for-2, scoring twice for the winners.

Freedom Optimist Lacrosse * 12-14 boys -- Mike Rabinovitz's third goal of the game was the deciding one, as White edged Gold, 7-6, in triple overtime. White improved its first-place record to 4-0.

Rabinovitz also contributed two assists. Kevin Roy had two goals and two assists, Tim Chairs one goal and Doug Richmond an assist.

Lee Windsor's three goals paced Gold's attack. Kris Norris, Richard Ashley and Pete Schaffer each added one for Gold. Gold keeper Joe Schaffer had 18 saves.

Grey outlasted Orange, 17-12, despite an eight-goal performance from Rob Onda. Will Gunther paced the winners' attack with six goals and two assists, and Tres Johnson added four goals.

Andrew Bettis had three goals and two assists for Grey, Justin Felmey three goals and Mike Ricker a goal and an assist. Drew Gibson scored twice for Orange, and Mike Foley and Jay Surega each added one goal.

Mike Pearsall scored three goals, and Tom Freedman added two goals and an assist, leading Black to an 8-2 victory over Maroon. Tim Hymiller had a goal and two assists for Black, Jared Atwell a goal and assist and Tim Schaub a goal. Chris Sraver scored twice for Maroon, and Brian Ruch had an assist.

* 9-11 -- Grey improved to 4-0 by beating Orange, 8-4. Owen Hubbs and Eric Vizzini keyed Grey's attack with three goals apiece; Hubbs added two assists.

Grey's Jordan Bosley and Denny Kosygiana each added a goal. Chad Parker and Kevin Schreiner each scored twice for Orange, with Schreiner adding an assist.

Blue used a balanced attack, with eight players scoring, to beat White, 15-3. Kris Gooding's five goals led Blue, and Mark Donohue added three.

Brandon Rodgers scored twice for Blue; contributing one goal apiece were Jonathan Mulieri, Zach Egolf, Steve Miller, Andrew Gordon and Joey Cairns. Matt Seivold, Bryan Robinson and

Doran Buppert scored White's goals.

Hubbs scored three goals, and Bosley and Danny Stansbury each added two, to give Grey a 9-6 win over Blue. Steve Robertson added a goal and assist, Chet Cairns a goal and Mike Woke an assist for Grey.

Anthony Ashenbrenner and John Mulieri paced Blue with two goals apiece. Gooding and Steve Miller each added a goal for Blue, and Joe Cairns, an assist.

Orange tripped White, 17-1. Chad Parks and Ryan Adams were big guns for Orange, with four goals apiece; Parks added two assists. Kevin Schreiner and Justin Waagbo each scored three times, with Schreiner adding an assist.

Mark Denis had two goals and an assist for Orange, and Ben Becker added a goal and assist. Matt Seivold had White's score.

Gold topped Grey, 7-1. Chris Schreiner scored three goals for the winners, and Lindsey Weiner two. Justin Cunningham and Courtney Gibson each had a goal for Gold. Pat Wyatt had Grey's score.

Grey got past Green, 3-1. Pat Wyatt scored twice and Philip Axtell once for the winners. Branton Myers had Green's goal.

Gold beat Red, 15-1. Chris Schreiner's six goals paced the winner. Bridget Murray added four and Justin Cunningham three. Matt Davis and Courtney Gibson also scored for Gold.
