Softball * 10-and-under girls -- The Linthicum-Ferndale Sidekicks improved their record to 4-0 by rolling past the Severn Athletic Club Wildcats, 17-8, last Tuesday.

The Sidekicks were led by the pitching of Pam Welch, Kristen Shay and Christina Klemkowski, who combined for 10 strikeouts.

Klemkowski, Kelly Sinnen and Tricia Karwczyk led the way offensively. Klemkowski homered twice while Sinnen went 3-for-3. Karwczyk knocked in two runs and Mary Notari and Jennifer Dixon each homered.

The Wildcats got solid pitching from Carla Rosenberger and Rachel Gianfore as they combined for 10 strikeouts. Christi Rosenberger, Ashley Merson and Kristen Brice provided the offense.

* Seniors -- The Wooden Nickel downed Betty & Jakes, 10-9 and 13-1, in Tuesday 55-60 League action.

In the first game, Tom Canning hit a three-run homer and Bill Lovelace added a two-run shot for the Wooden Nickel. Don Good and Fran Pilarski each had two RBIs for Betty & Jakes and Bob Kilabrew went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Gerald Baily went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Tim Nulty got the win in the second game.

Top of the Hill split two games with Corrigans. Thurlow Carey went 4-for-4 and Bob Poling and Bill Nalley went 3-for-4 for Top of the Hill in the first game. In the second game, Carey went 4-for-4 with two doubles and Gary Talbert went 3-for-3.

Spindlers beat the Classics in a doubleheader, 14-6 and 12-1. Bob Lucas went 4-for-7 with 10 RBIs and Phil Massenburg and Bill Prunkl were the winning pitchers.

Arthur's and Thompson Legends split a doubleheader. Arthur's won the first game, 9-0, thanks to five RBIs by Howard Borhoess.

Charles Dukes was the winning pitcher for Thompson in the second game, won 18-3.

Basketball

The Anne Arundel County-based Maryland Waves 14-year-old Amateur Athletic Union girls basketball team captured its third consecutive Maryland AAU tournament title, qualifying them for this summer's National AAU tournament in Cocoa Beach, Fla.

Last Friday night, the Waves downed the Frederick County Force, 52-12. Rene Hines had a game-high 13 points and Cara Consuegra 10.

The Frederick County Force managed to fight its way out of the loser's bracket in the double-elimination tournament and eventually met the Waves in Sunday's championship game.

The Force kept it closer the second time around but it wasn't enough as the Maryland Waves opened the second half with 10 straight points and ran away with a 53-40 victory.

Consuegra led the way with 14 points. Shannon Cohen had 13 and Hines nine.

In addition to the National AAU tournament in July, the Waves will compete in Oxon Hill on May 28-30 and in Philadelphia on June 11-12.

Baseball

* 13-and-under boys -- The Gambrills Athletic Club A's improved their overall record to 8-1 and their league mark to 2-0 by defeating the Maryland Orioles in a doubleheader last week, 7-3 and 3-1.

In the first game, Ryan Morse went 2-for-3 for the Athletics and Austin Decker and Billy Little both went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. First baseman Justin Hackley knocked in a run for Gambrills.

Decker picked up his second win of the season for the A's as he struck out three and yielded three hits in 5 2/3 innings. Ryan Frostbutter got the save.

The second game saw Little throw a no-hitter. The right-hander struck out 10 and walked five in seven innings.

Morse went 1-for-3 with an RBI and T.J. Loyola singled in the A's other run. Tim Hecker recorded the only other hit for Gambrills.

* Pony Division -- The Optimist Rangers defeated the Optimist Phillies, 8-2, in Saturday's Annapolis City Pony League season opener.

The Annapolis Baseball Club Red Sox defeated the All-Stars, 15-3, Saturday. Jesse Stubbs recorded seven strikeouts in three innings to earn the win and Matt Schubert got the save by hurling three scoreless innings of relief.

Last Tuesday, Phillies pitcher Mark Jarashow's complete-game one-hitter helped his team defeat the Red Sox, 8-3, at Old Bates Field.

In other league action Tuesday night, the Rangers downed the Yankees, 21-11.

* Bronco Division -- Mount Olive opened its Bronco Division season with a 21-17 victory over Navy at Colison Field.

In Saturday's second game, the Annapolis Baseball Club Red Sox defeated the Optimist No. 2, 16-5. Michael Everd's consistent pitching made the difference for the Red Sox.

The Optimist No. 1 and the Annapolis Phillies played to a 7-7 tie.

On Monday, Optimist No. 2 downed Navy, 15-4, at the Naval Station's Retelle Field. Chris Ramon and Andy Smith combined to pitch a one-hitter.

In Tuesday night action at Griscom Field, the Red Sox downed the ABC Cubs, 17-4.

Soccer

* Under-12 boys -- The Arundel Soccer Association Strike Force improved its record to 5-0 with a 5-0 victory last Sunday over St. Jane.

Chris Osborn led the way with three goals and Jacob Crouse and Ricky Swain each scored once.

Michael Godfrey and Patrick Whitmire shared time in the net for ASA and combined for the shutout. Also playing well for ASA was Garth Collins.

In other under-12 boys action, the ASA Lightning defeated the MSA Cougars, 2-1. Joe Danahy and Kenny Woltz each scored a goal for the Lightning (4-1). Other standouts included J.D. Gullion, Cliff Mann and Michael Calder.

* Under-10 boys -- The Arundel Soccer Association Rockets saw their record soar to 4-1 after defeating GORC last Sunday, 2-0. Joey Griffin and Matthew Bury provided the goals for the Rockets and A.J. Stapleton had an assist.

The ASA Thunderbirds saw their Anne Arundel Youth Soccer League record slip to 1-1-3 after losing to St. Jane, 2-1, Sunday. Ricky Posinsky scored the lone goal for the Thunderbirds.

* Under-12 girls -- The Arundel Soccer Association Jets captured the championship of the South Bowie Boys & Girls Club Tournament by downing the host team in the finals, 1-0.

Erin Calloway scored the winning goal on an assist from Natasha Rust. Also playing well for the champs were Melissa Gagnier and Diane Newcomer.

* Under-19 girls -- Due to several injuries, the Severna Park Alliance played the entire game Sunday with only 10 players. But, that didn't stop them from defeating the Columbia Chargers, 1-0. The victory improved Severna Park's Washington Area Girls Soccer League record to 2-1-1.

Kristin Briggs scored the game's only goal with less than five minutes remaining.

"I couldn't be more proud of the girls for their effort," said Severna Park coach Tom Ehart. "To play such a good team like Columbia and beat them short-handed says so much about how well we're playing."

Melanie McMullen preserved the shutout as she recorded 22 saves. Also contributing for the winners were Christina Coroneos, Shelley Seivert, Kristin Buckley, Kristin Riismandel, Lindsay Waxler, Jessica Hines, Erin Hon and Linda Rothemund.

Gymnastics

Top Flight's Level 7 girls gymnastics team recently won the Maryland State Championship in Williamsport.

Undefeated Top Flight accumulated 110.925 points en route to their eighth straight team title.

In the 8-11 age group, Kimberly Jewell of Glen Burnie took first on bars (9.5), beam (9.45), floor (9.6) and the all-around with 37.65. Beth Kosmides

of Annapolis placed second on bars (9.425) and floor (9.45), third on beam (8.7) and was third all-around with 36.375.

Daria Hay placed fourth on vault (9.2) and beam (8.65) and was fifth all-around (35.6). Megan Miller finished fourth on floor (9.1) and was fifth on vault (9.2). Gabrielle Federline placed sixth on bars (9.075).

Top Flight gymnast Jennifer Chairs led her team in the 12-14 age group as she placed first on beam (8.75), floor (9.475) and the all-around (36.175). Chairs also took second on bars (8.85) and third on vault (9.1)

Chairs, Jewell, Kosmides and Hay were also part of the Maryland State Level 7 team consisting of the top six scorers in all age groups.

In Level 6 action, Cathy Schnell of Annapolis, competing in the 8-10 year-old bracket, took first on beam (9.325), seventh on bars (9.125), 10th on vault (9.05) and was second all-around with 36.65. Schnell was also eighth all-around out of the 185 Maryland State Level 6 competitors.

Stephanie Theilen placed ninth on bars (9.05).

The MultiSport acrobatic team crowned 12 new state champions, swept numerous events and medaled an additional 16 athletes at the United State Acrobatics Federation Maryland State Championships at Gymnastics Plus in Columbia.

Melissa Snow won the Level 5 tumbling event and then came back with partners Shannon Enright and Katie Eisenhardt to win the Intermediate Women's Trio event for the 13-18 age group.

Melissa McGuffin won the gold in Level 4 tumbling and teamed up with Kristen Cilento and Julie Dykstra for a silver medal in the Novice Women's Trios.

McGuffin took another silver medal in the Novice Women's Pairs with partner Elizabeth Krauss. Krauss came back to take a first place in Level 3 tumbling for the 12-and-under age group.

Other state champion tumblers for MultiSport included Robyn Grimes (Level 1), Megan Glaze (Level 6) and Tom Hamblin (Intermediate Men, 19 and older). Steven Allessandro (Level 3) led a 1-2-3 sweep for the boys 12-and-under group, backed up

by Sonny Haft and Shane Shewbridge.

Acrobatics champions from MultiSport included Bill Leaman and Joshua Adlin (Intermediate Men's Pairs), Robyn Grimes and Julie Dykstra (Beginner Women's Pairs), Andy Kim and Meredith Carpenter (Intermediate Mixed Pairs).

Other local medalists were Courtney Davis, Veronica Hoffman, Eva Briers, Kirsten Mack, Brian Payne, Stacey Cohen, Lori Bauer and Ashley Howard.

All members of the MultiSport acrobatics team will advance to the Eastern Regional Championships on May 22 in Burke, Va.

Lacrosse

* Juniors -- The Severna Park Green Hornets Junior A team brought home two more victories last week as they downed the

GARCI Orangemen and the Buccaneers.

Ryan Miller's four goals lifted the Green Hornets to a 7-6 overtime win over the Orangemen Thursday night. Jon Lehmann, Josh Cornett and Ryan Metzbower rounded out the scoring for the Hornets with a goal apiece.

Severna Park goalkeeper Charles Robinson registered nine saves while receiving excellent support from defensemen Robert Hoffman, Jason Mullin and Ken Howell.

The Green Hornets didn't have as much trouble handling the Bucs, rolling to a 13-1 victory. Lehmann, Metzbower, Hoffman, ,, Justin Miller, Bert Whitelock, Ian Dunn, Mike Kubas and Dale Anderson were among the scorers for Severna Park.
