Two county police officers wrestled to the ground a man wanted for assault and battery Monday afternoon before an angry crowd in Meade Village, police said yesterday.

Corey Dinocus Sanders, 23, of no known address, was charged with assault and battery and two counts of resisting arrest, police said.

Western District patrolman Thomas J. Kohlmann recognized Mr. Sanders as an assault suspect as he was walking in the 1700 block of Meade Village Circle at 5:45 p.m., police said. When the officer tried to arrest him, Mr. Sanders turned toward Officer Kohlmann and shoved him backward. Officer Kohlmann tried to put an arm lock on Mr. Sanders, who again pushed the officer, police said.

As the two struggled, a large crowd gathered, "becoming very hostile toward me," Officer Kohlmann said in his report. Western District Officer W. D. Daughters, who had been called as backup, arrived and helped Officer Kohlmann handcuff Mr. Sanders.

People in the crowd began shouting at the officers as they struggled with Mr. Sanders, who was on the ground, police said. The officers eventually subdued Mr. Sanders without further incident, police said.
