Consultation on anxieties

THE BALTIMORE SUN

People who believe their anxieties exceed the everyday worries that touch most everyone can get a free evaluation tomorrow at the conference center of the Sheppard Pratt Hospital.

The service is part of National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day, in which about 150 mental health centers across the country will be offering free consultations; dispensing information about symptoms and available treatments and -- when needed -- making referrals to specialists.

Anxiety disorders include phobias, obsessive-compulsive behavior, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and generalized anxiety disorder -- constant, unrealistic worry that affects a person's ability to complete daily activities.

At Sheppard Pratt, the consultations are being offered by the Anxiety and Stress Disorders Institute of Maryland, a private practice of psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists and other counselors located on the hospital grounds in Towson.

The evaluations will be given between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Although some people may be seen on a walk-in basis, reservations may be made by calling 938-8449.

Those in need of treatment will be referred not only to the Towson practice, but also to mental health professionals near their homes, to self-help groups or to community mental health centers if they lack insurance or the means to pay.

Nationally, the event is being organized by the Anxiety Disorders Association of America.
