Student-athlete all-county team to be named Monday

Those of you who have been calling my 24-Hour Sportsline, (410) 647-2499, will be happy to know that the 12th annual Anne Arundel Sun's All-County Academic-Athletic Team will be announced Monday.

Ten boys and 10 girls, who excel academically and athletically, will be honored at the Anne Arundel Trade Council's annual spring membership banquet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the BWI Marriott in Linthicum.

Each student named to the team will be profiled at the banquet and receive a plaque. The top overall male and female each will receive an award.

Coaches, faculty, fans and friends who wish to attend the banquet should call Carol Dreyfus at the Trade Council (410) 757-6709 by today to reserve a $35 ticket.

Severn's Hewitt honored

Congratulations to veteran Severn athletic director Fred Hewitt, who was named Maryland Athletic Director of the Year by the National Council on Secondary Schools at the Maryland State Athletic Directors spring convention last weekend in Ocean City.

Hewitt also was elected to a two-year term as president of the Maryland State Athletic Directors and will represent the group at some national events.

Pee wee workout

Key School in Hillsmere, under the direction of Bonnie Ulrich, will have 400 children exercising simultaneously on Wednesday in honor of Physical Fitness Month in Maryland.

Broadneck's summer camps

Dates have been set for Broadneck High's summer sports camps. This year's offerings begin June 20-24 with a baseball clinic directed by head coach Mark Stover.

Other camps are as follows: basketball, coach Ken Kazmarek, June 27-July 1; soccer, coach John Braun, July 11-15; lacrosse, coach Clay White, July 25-29; volleyball, coach Tom Cole, Aug. 8-12; and field hockey, coach Phoebe Kelly, Aug. 8-12.

For more information, call Tim McMullen, assistant athletic director, at (410) 757-1300.

Taking after a brother

Is Severna Park junior outfielder Scott Neuberger following in the footsteps of his older brother, Steve, now in his second year of play at Maryland? Steve was named All-Metro in 1992 and Maryland's Gatorade Amateur Player of the Year.

Scott started this week batting .613 with four homers and 13 RBIs. The county and state record for batting average in a season is .586 set first in 1991 by Rob McCandless (played on same team with Steve) of Severna Park and tied last spring by Arundel's Tim Giles.

Falcon coach Jimmy Pitt said that Steve was "the best outfielder we've ever had," so what will he say about Scott by next year?

A baseball family

Did you know that the St. John's (Washington) baseball team that nipped DeMatha of Hyattsville, 3-1, this week in a crucial Washington Catholic Athletic Conference game is coached by Davidsonville's Ed Gibbs?

Gibbs' Cadets are 14-4 overall and 8-2 in the WCAC, one game behind league-leading Gonzaga. DeMatha is 12-7 and 7-2. Infielder Mark Gibbs plays for his dad's team and is the brother of Kevin Gibbs, who continues to sparkle at Old Dominion where he is a sophomore.

Bad times at Spalding

Archbishop Spalding baseball coach Tom Lind can plainly see why his Cavaliers (3-7) are struggling.

"We lost one of our top pitchers to academic ineligibility, and we're batting .120 as a team, not to mention all the errors we make," said Lind after Tuesday's loss at Joe Cannon Stadium by 14-9 to No. 9 Gilman.

"We also lack a leader and those little things make it tough to win."

Baseball at Joe Cannon

For the local baseball junkies who like to wander from park to park here are some coming games at Joe Cannon: 8 p.m. tonight, the championship game of the third annual Doc O'Malley Memorial 14-and-under Tournament, pitting the Maryland Orioles and the Yankee Rebels, and a noon doubleheader tomorrow between UMBC and Charleston Southern.

The Maryland Orioles are coached by former Calvert Hall JV coach Larry Wineke.
