It was a game No. 12 North County (8-5) had to win to keep its playoff hopes alive in the 4A East Region. Junior Mike Wooden made sure the Knights got it by not allowing an Old Mill player to reach base.

Working on a perfect game and holding a 2-0 lead over No. 2 Old Mill (10-3) in the last inning, Wooden started leadoff hitter Mike Longazel with three balls. A fastball made it 3-1 and Longazel hit the next pitch hard on the ground -- but right at first baseman Tweety Barton.

Wooden (4-1) then struck out Brian Bogle and got Jimmy Greer on a grounder to Matt Lentz at third to complete the perfect game and 2-0 victory.

Steve Tomshack scored the first run off Mike Bussey (2-2), in the first inning after doubling to left.

Wooden singled Tomshack to third and he scored on Bob Christopher's sacrifice fly to left.

The Knights, held to six hits by Bussey, who struck out nine, added an insurance run in the sixth when Christopher singled with two outs, stole second and scored on Barton's second hit of the game.

Two runs were more than enough as Wooden threw his second career no-hitter, tying the Anne Arundel County record.

Wooden struck out the first seven batters and had 15 for the game. No one hit the ball to the outfield.

Every Patriot in the lineup struck out at least once except Josh Fretz (grounded out twice), with the No. 2 through 7 hitters striking out at least twice each as Wooden extended his season total to 47.

"I knew Old Mill was a good first-pitch, fastball-hitting team, so I started them with curves and tried to keep them off stride," said Wooden.
