Gymnastics
Last weekend, Perna Gymnastics' Levels V, VI, and VII teams traveled to Sewell, N.J., to compete at Atlantic Coast Gymnastics.
At Level V, Kira Armacost scored 7.40 on vaulting (fourth), 6.55 on parallel bars (fourth), 8.85 on balance beam (first), 7.25 on floor exercises (fifth) for a fourth-place all-around score of 30.05.
Megan Newman scored 8.45 on vault (second), 8.10 on bars (third), 8.15 on beam (fifth), 7.35 on floor (ninth) and second-place all-around of 32.05.
Lindsay Winter scored 7.55 on vault (third), 8.50 on bars (first), 8.75 on beam (second), 7.95 on floor (second) and a first-place all-around score of 32.75.
Katie Mechalske scored 8.55 on vault (first), 9.05 on bars (first), 8.15 on beam (fourth), 7.85 on floor (fifth) and a first-place all-around of 33.60.
Erin Hiner scored 6.85 on vault (ninth), 7.05 on bars (ninth), 8.25 on beam (third), 7.90 on floor (fourth) and 30.05 all-around (ninth).
The Level V squad finished second with a team score of 99.75.
At Level VI, Amanda Ebaugh (8-11) scored 9.50 on vault (first), 9.25 on bars (third), 8.35 on beam (sixth), 8.90 on floor (fourth) and a first-place all-around of 36.00.
Jennifer Forman scored 9.10 on vault (sixth), 9.10 on bars (fourth) and an all-around of 28.70.
Lauren Prentice had 9.35 on vault (third), 9.35 on bars (second), 8.35 on beam (seventh), and a third-place all-around of 32.25.
Erin Graf scored 8.75 on vault (sixth), 5.80 on bars (10th), 7.20 on beam (seventh), 8.30 on floor (fourth) and an all-around of 30.05 (seventh).
At Level VI (12-14), Courtney Prentice scored 9.25 on vault (third), 9.00 on bars (third), 8.35 on beam (first), 7.55 on floor (seventh) and a second-place all-around of 34.15.
L The Level VI team placed second with a team score of 106.25.
Competing at Level VII, Michele Winebrunner scored 9.25 on vault (first), 8.45 on bars (second), 8.20 on beam (first), 7.85 on floor (second) and a first-place all-around of 33.75.
Stacey Hyle scored 8.80 on vault (third), 7.20 on bars (fifth), 7.20 on beam (third), 8.45 on floor (first) and a third-place all-around of 31.65.
Wesley Cross, a 16-year-old from Westminster, recently scored well enough at the USA Gymnastics Region VII competition at Allentown, Pa., to qualify for the Junior Olympic Nationals May 4-8 at Augusta College in Augusta, Ga.
Cress, a member of the Gymnastics Plus Boys team in Columbia, scored a combined compulsory and optional score of 89.65 in the Class II 16-18 group at Allentown.
He placed first on the parallel bars and floor exercises, second on pommel horse, third on vaulting and had the second-highest all-around score in his group.
Sykesville Youth Baseball
Minor Leagues -- The Royals blanked the Cubs, 15-0, as Joe DeChiara, Jon Martin and David Silverstein combined for a one-hitter. DeChiara was 3-for-3, and David Wheeler, 2-for-3 for the winners. Cubs pitcher Josh Ahmanson struck out nine batters in three innings.
The Indians rallied for three runs in the final inning, but fell one short, as the Pirates hung on for a 7-6 victory. Jonathan Prietz's two-run triple was the big hit for the Indians in that sixth inning. He also had tripled in two runs earlier in the game.
Andrew Gackenbach's solo homer had tied the game, 3-3 in the Pirates' third. Kyle Leonard was 2-for-3 for the Pirates, and Adam Cohen added an RBI triple.
Matt Jolley singled home the tying run in the bottom of the sixth to give his Dodgers a 7-7 deadlock with the Red Sox. Jolley also had a two-run double, and Dave Szymanski was 2-for-3 for the Dodgers. Ryan Edmunds and Tommy Harrod each rapped a two-run double for the Sox.
The Tigers and Braves tied, 11-11. Brian Schmidt was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored for the Braves. Kurt Keech chipped in with a 2-for-2 effort.
The Tigers' Aaron Taylor hit a two-run homer. Tigers pitcher Brandon Franklin struck out six batters in the last three innings, including the side in the final inning. He allowed two runs.
The Orioles jumped to a 7-3 lead after three innings and went on to beat the Giants, 9-5. Nick Sargent swatted a two-run homer for the Orioles, Eric Williston was 2-for-3, and Michael Mandella went 2-for-3, scoring two runs and driving in two. Steve Liberto stole home for the Giants.
The Expos exploded for 11 runs in the late innings to beat the Rangers, 12-6. Nick Kraus' bases-loaded triple highlighted a five-run Expos' fourth. Chris Leonard's two-run single was the big hit in the Expos' six-run fifth inning. Mike Neaubaur was 2-for-2 for the Expos.
Expos reliever Matt Boone escaped a bases-loaded no-out situation in the Rangers' fourth without yielding a run. He pitched three scoreless innings, striking out four, and was the winning pitcher.
Rangers starter Lloyd Jones allowed only one run in three innings, striking out six.
The Mariners started with a six-run first inning and went on to beat the Mets, 20-6. Ryan Bicking's three-run home run was the key hit in the big Mariners first. Bicking was 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Matt McGuire socked two home runs for the Mariners, going 4-for-4 and driving in six runs.
The Mariners' Mike Cavanaugh was 3-for-3, scoring three runs. Dustin Lippert had two doubles and was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. He struck out four in a two-inning mound stint.
Timmy Srnsel had a single and RBI for the Mets, and Brian Farley stole two bases and scored a run.
Fallston Baseball Tournament
The Sykesville Stingers placed second in last weekend's Fallston age 10 tournament. They opened with 9-8 and 8-3 wins over Fallston and Hereford, respectively.
The Stingers then beat Overlea, 6-4 in the semifinals. Overlea, ahead 4-2, loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning. But Sykesville reliever Matt McGuire retired the side without yielding a run.
Mike Daugherty and Robbie Ruch closed out the game, holding Overlea scoreless the rest of the way.
Nick Sargent's RBI triple and Daugherty's game-tying RBI single brought Sykesville even in the third inning.
Brian Schmidt's two-run double in the fourth gave the Stingers their final 6-4 margin.
In the finale, Sykesville fell to Fallston, 11-8. Fallston pulled away after Sykesville tied the game, 8-8 in the fourth inning.
Nick Kraus was 2-for-2, with a home run and two RBIs for Sykesville. Robbie Ruch supported with a 2-for-2 effort, including a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Rugby
The Mason-Dixon Rugby Club split two matches this weekend. It trimmed Patuxent River Naval Air Station, 32-10, in the A Side.
However its St. Mary's County-based opposition prevailed, 22-15 the B Side.
In the A Side, Billy Utermahlen scored two five-point tries. Ron Myers, Tommy Spangler and Tony Gilbert each added one. Jonathan Steiner booted two-point conversion kicks after two of the tries.
Kirk Myers accounted for the final Mason-Dixon points with a three-point drop goal.
Mason-Dixon's A Side is 4-1-1. Todd Walter scored two tries, and Kirk Myers, one, in the B Side match.
Maryland Youth Lacrosse
9-10 boys -- Gamber's Lightning II topped Lutherville, 8-3. Jason Holman scored four goals for Gamber, Kyle Zentz, two, and Bradley Thompson and Matt Keating, one apiece.
Defensemen Vinnie Iadevaia and Brian Roche played outstanding games and played a large part in limiting Lutherville to three shots on goal in the second half.
Holman's three goals were all that Gamber could muster, however, in a 6-3 loss to Overlea.
13-14 boys -- Jeff Landow's goal with 40 seconds remaining gave Gamber's Junior squad a 5-4 win over Towsontowne. Towsontowne had led at halftime, 3-1.
Matt Dudderer and Brad Jenkenson each added goals for
Gamber, and Shawn Martin scored two. Midfielder John Ritcey and defenseman Jesse Jones turned in strong defensive performances.
Junior girls -- Gamber's Junior girls team wasn't so successful. After forging a 7-7 tie with Perry Hall early in the second half, Gamber eventually lost, 13-11.
Courtney Bierne, whose early second-half score knotted the count at 7, had six goals. Becky Buppert added three; Abby Cooper and Mandy Hare each scored one.
Freedom Optimist Lacrosse
12-14 -- Tim Hymiller scored his second goal of the game in overtime to give Black an 8-7 victory over Gold. Mike Pearsall scored two goals and had one assist for Black. Erik Fisher and Tom Freedman each scored a goal and assist, and Jared Atwell and Mike Bowers added one goal apiece.
Gold's Pete Shoffer and Lee Windsor each scored twice. Brendan Floyd added a goal and assist, and Kris Norris and Eric Schottler each had a score for Gold. Gold keeper Joe Shaffer had 15 saves.
Tim Chairs scored five goals, as his White team downed Orange, 17-10. Mike Rabinovitz added three goals and an assist for White, and Chris Heck had two goals.
Doug Richmond, Greg Sandruck and Ryan Wynne each added one goal, and Kevin Roy and Adam White each tacked on an assist for the winners. Pat Wynne had two assists.
Rob Onda was the big gun for Orange, with six goals and two assists. Jay Surega added two goals, and Mark Manger and David Martin, one.
Gray beat Maroon, 10-1. Will Gunther paced the winners with four goals and two assists.
Andrew Bettis, David Denis, Mike Ricker, Justin Folmey and Brent Gardner each added one goal for Grey. Scott Zilka, Travis Buccolo and Chris Blanchard each chipped in with an assist.
Ryan Heneman had Maroon's goal.
