Basketball
* 14-year-old girls -- The Maryland Waves AAU girls basketball team, based in Anne Arundel County, has outscored its first four opponents by 171 points during the first two weekends of competition in the AAU Tournament.
In their first game, the Waves beat the Lady Raiders of Calvert County, 73-23. Sarah Brino, Cara Consuegra and Renee Hines led the way for Maryland with 10 points each.
Game 2 saw the Waves rip past their second-team entry in the tournament, 68-21. Britney Whitehurst and Shannon Cohen scored 11 points each for the Waves and Heidi Moldenhauer added 10.
The Broadneck Spirit was the Waves' victim in Game 3 as they bowed, 71-27. Hines led the way with 17 points and Consuegra chipped in 14.
Last Sunday, the Waves used a balanced attack to turn away the Baltimore-base Freeplay, 68-38. Hines paced the team with 15 points, followed by Moldenhauer with 14, Cohen (13) and Consuegra (10).
Lacrosse
* Juniors -- The Severna Park Green Hornets brought home two more victories last week with a 15-1 win over GARCI and a 10-5 victory over Cape St. Claire.
Jon Lehman's hat trick and seven saves by goalie Charles Robinson paced the Hornets in their win over the Cape.
Soccer
* Under-13 boys -- The Severna Park Sting opened its National Capital Soccer League Division I season last Sunday by defeating the Virginia Vista, 2-0.
Severna Park coach Mike Mooney praised the efforts of his defense, which included goalkeeper Reb Beatty, and fullbacks Reid Shaklee, Bernie Edwards, Sean McGarry, Travis Moore and Steve Novak.
Jon Parisi opened the scoring for the Sting when he spun and shot the ball into the net. Brett Johnson and Billy Mooney were credited with a double assist on the play.
Novak added the second goal on a 40-yard blast that bounced over the head of Virginia's keeper.
Helping make things happen on offense for the victors were Jon Shedlosky, Adam Young, Greg Wojtech, Brandon Korink and Paul Harris.
* Under-19 girls -- The Severna Park Alliance improved their record to 1-0-1 in the Washington Area Girls Soccer League Under-19 Premier Division.
The Alliance defeated the Vista Phoenix, 2-0, Sunday. Both goals came late in the first half and the defense was able to record its second straight shutout.
Kristin Briggs (Northeast) and Kristin Riismandel provided the goals for Severna Park on assists from Christina Coroneos and Shelley Seivert (Severna Park).
Alliance goalkeeper Melanie McMullen recorded 15 saves while receiving excellent defensive support from fullbacks Lindsay Waxler, Jessica Hines, Carrie Budzinski, Amy Adams and Linda Rothemund.
"This is the best soccer that our team has ever played," said Severna Park coach Tom Ehart. "Our movement off the ball allowed us to dominate the game. It was a game where nothing went wrong."
* Under-12 boys -- The St. Jane Wolfpack presented a well-balanced attack as it scored three goals in each half en route to a 6-0 win over the Severn Spirit.
Scoring single goals for St. Jane were Charlie Stup, Matt Death, Adam Frashure, Nick Hurd, frank Mathias and Bill Coursey. Coursey also had two assists and Frashure was credited with one feed.
Leading the way defensively for the Wolfpack (2-0-1) were Ian McCormack, Britt Mitchell, Michael Edwards and goalkeeper Matt Walker (seven saves).
The Arundel Soccer Association Strike Force downed Arthur Slade last week, 5-0.
Chris Osborn, Ricky Swain, Kevin Funk, Jason Scott and Brett Bosher each scored single goals for the Strike Force (4-0) while David Brice and Peter Gaither contributed with solid all-around play.
The ASA Lightning improved its record to 3-1 with a 5-0 victory over St. Jane.
John Hamrick Jr. recorded a hat trick for the Lightning and Joey Danahy added two goals. Other standouts for ASA were Patrick MacDonald and Randy Deltuva.
* Under-10 -- The ASA Rockets dropped a 1-0 decision last week to GARCI. Playing well in defeat for the Rockets were Rachel Jackowski, Matthew Bury, Shiloh Nosel, Matthew Walsh and A.J. Stapleton.
* Under-14 girls -- Goals by Erin Hartman, Stacey Jackowski and Lindsey Turner helped lift the ASA Jets to a 3-0 win over Arthur Slade. Also playing well for the victors were Abria Queen and Whitney Gotay.
* Under-10 boys -- Two goals by Chris Stuckey helped the ASA Thunderbirds tie the Crofton Cardinals, 3-3, last week. Jared Howard scored the only other goal for the Thunderbirds (1-0-3).
Swimming
Two members of the Naval Academy Junior Swim Club, accompanied by Coach Bob Montgomery, competed in the recent Council for National Cooperation in Aquatics Championships at Indian University Natatorium in Indianapolis.
The meet drew swimmers from nearly 150 clubs throughout the United States and from as far away as Hawaii.
The Navy girls 9-10 relay team set team records with their first-place finishes in both the 400- and 200-yard medley relays. The team of Chelsea Hastings, Rebecca Lavell, Alex Golod and Kirstin Bayly won the 400 medley in 4 minutes, 58.84 seconds, while the team of Hastings, Lavell, Golod and Ashley Roark swept the 200 medley in 2:15.58.
The 200 freestyle relay team placed second as Golod, Roark, Bayly and Hastings turned in a time of 2:00.70.
In the girls 11-12 relay division, the Navy team of Julie Anderson, Elizabeth Lavell, Coty Hastings and Elizabeth Fowler placed eighth in the 400 medley (4:36.08) and 16th in the 200 medley (2:09.54).
In the individual events, the Navy team was led by 10-year-old Chelsea Hastings with a fifth-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:08.70) and an eighth-place finish in the 200 and 100 individual medleys with times of 2:35.86 and 1:10.21, respectively.
The only boy competing with the Navy team during the three-day meet was 11-year-old Nathan Hall of Annapolis. Hall placed ninth in the 100 breast (1:23.14) and set a team record in the 50 backstroke (33.50).
Jamie Puromaki, a 1992 graduate of Glen Burnie High School and a sophomore at Ohio State University, turned in a fine performance at the Phillips 66 Senior National Swimming Championships last month in Federal Way, Wash.
Swimming in his first U.S. Nationals, Puromaki placed 13th in the 400-meter IM from a field of 50 entrants with a time of 4:32.93. He also placed 20th in both the 200 IM (2:10.04) and 200 butterfly (2:05.17). Puromaki swam the breaststroke leg on Ohio State's 400 medley relay team that placed sixth in a time of 3:52.72.
U.S. Swimming recently released the National Age Group Top 16 times for the 1993 Long Course season and Puromaki ranked 10th in the 400 IM (4:33.26) among boys aged 17-18 and 11th in the 200 butterfly (2:06.40).
Softball
* 12-and-under girls -- The Severna Park Blazers extended their undefeated streak to four with victories over the Havenwood Stingers (24-2) and the Glen Burnie Blazers (12-5).
Marianne Martin and Jennifer Wadsworth went 3-for-3 while Laura Tessieri was 2-for-3. Michelle Burke and Christy Middleton recorded multiple steals for Severna Park.
In the win over the Glen Burnie Blazers, Becky Truver and Kiersten Klein supplied timely hitting and Beth Plymer turned in a strong defensive effort to preserve the victory.
The Blazers began the season by defeating Gambrills, 29-1, and the North Glen Hornets, 16-2.
Kellie Schneider, Emily Fine and Molly Maddox combined to strike out 17 for the Blazers in their
opening-day win and Karen Grupski went 3-for-3.
Schneider, Fine and Maddox shared time on the mound in the win over the Hornets and teamed up to strike out 16. Jennifer Wadswort went 3-for-3 and Martianne Martin was 2-for-2.
* 10-and-under girls -- The Linthicum-Ferndale Sidekicks opened their season last week by edging the North Glen Hot Stuff, 17-16.
The Sidekicks were led by Amy Brocious, Kelly Sinnen, Megan Collins and Tiffany Flowers who combined to go 9-for-9 with two walks.
Linthicum-Ferndale pitchers Kristen Shay, Christina Klemkowski and Jennifer Dixon held off the Hot Stuff's strong hitting attack, which was led by Amy Dixon who scored four runs.
On Tuesday, the Sidekicks upped their record to 2-0 by nipping the Linthicum-Ferndale Angels, 14-13. Brocious hit an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the last inning to ice it for the Sidekicks.
Tricia Krawczyk got her first hit for the Sidekicks and Lauren Murphy, Shanna Bartlinski and Kristy Boss helped the Angels stay close.
Gymnastics
The Docksiders gymnastics team recently has achieved much success.
Elise Ray, 12, recently qualified to the Elite Gymnastics Program and with her qualification she was ranked No. 1 going into the American Classics Competition and Training in Orlando, Fla.
Ray also qualified to compete in the USA Gymnastics Sports Fest at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. This competition will determine who makes the USA Junior National Team.
Stefanie Light, a senior at Chesapeake High, just accepted a full scholarship to Ohio State. Because of a knee injury, Light was unable to compete this season, but her recovery has been exceptional.
Natalie Bracciale, Krista Gole, Amy Langendorf, Gemma Robison and Becky Singleton recently competed in the Level 7 regional competition and Robison and Singleton each earned a berth in the USA Gymnastics Nationals.
Robison will compete in the Senior Nationals next month in Seattle, Wash., while Robison is preparing for the Junior Nationals May 5-8 in Allentown, Pa.
Robison turned in a first-place finish in the vault, performing a handspring front flip with a half twist (9.55) and was fifth all-around with 36.40. Singleton qualified with an all-around score of 35.63.
The MultiSport acrobatics team recently earned five first places and qualified 14 athletes for states at the Music-N-Motion Invitational in Laureldale, Pa.
Tom Hamblin and Courtney Davis -- both 1992 champions -- took first place in balance and temp routines in the advanced mixed pair event for the 19-and-over group. Teammates Bill Leaman and Megan Glaze helped sweep the event with their second-place finish.
Leaman and partner Joshua Adlin added a first place in the intermediate men's pairs with a routine loaded with superior strength elements.
MultiSport's women's intermediate trio of Shannon Enright, Melissa Snow and Katie Eisenhart and the women's intermediate pair of Veronica Hoffman and Meghan O'Reilly also captured first-place honors in the 13-18 age bracket.
The intermediate mixed pair of Andy Kim and Meredith Carpenter scored a victory in the 19-and-over age group in their combined sports acrobatics routine that featured excellent inverted partner balances.
Also qualifying for US Sports Acrobatics Federation Maryland State Championships, which will take place on May 1 at Gymnastics Plus in Columbia, were Julia Dykstra and Robin Grimes, who competed in the beginner women's pairs and placed fourth.
