Softball
9-10 girls -- The Magiro Pharmacy Road Runners looked more like base runners in their Howard County Youth Program Mustang League game over the weekend, but it wasn't enough against the Normandy Ford Angels.
The Runners scored six runs in the first inning and led the entire way before falling, 18-17.
Ellen Arrabal and Heather Crouse powered the Angels with big hits, while Brittany Smith and Michelle Godbault led the Runners.
Nikcole Volland had several key hits and Laura Gaudio and Laurne Abremski pitched well as the Capital Cake Blue Jays and Douglas Homes Phantoms played to a 22-22 tie.
The Gallery 44 Ladybugs fell to the Normandy Ford Angels, 12-3.
The Hornets defeated the Neubauer Exxon Blue Bandits, 9-8; the Fashion Bug Red Barons beat the Bandits, 14-13, and the Blue Jays edged the Hornets, 16-15.
11-12 girls -- Marie Ziesat had an inside-the-park home run and Jennifer Tayabji doubled twice to lead the Neubauer Exxon Blue Bandits over the Gallery 44 Ladybugs, 12-11, in the Howard County Youth Program Bronco League over the weekend.
The Lions Club Yellow Jackets scored a 9-8 victory over the Clarks Do It Center Flying Aces. Heather Karabaich, Lauren Merkle and Megan Coleman hit doubles for the victors.
Julie Taury of the Capital Cake Blue Jays pitched three shutout innings to lead her team to an 11-8 win over the Fashion Bug Red Barons.
The Blue Bandits defeated the Lions Club Yellow Jackets, 14-1; the Blue Jays came from behind to edge the Magiro Pharmacy Road Runners; Michele Simon ripped two homers to power the Flying Aces past the Ladybugs, 25-11; Christy Keffer hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the last inning to give the Gypsies a 19-16 win over the Regency Cleaners Fillies; the Kiwana's Cougars beat the Douglas Homes Phantoms, 13-4, and the Angels opened their season by defeating the Cougars, 11-10.
13-14 girls -- Amy Rohrbacher hit a three-run home run and Sarah Walsh chipped in with clutch defense as the Clarks Do It Center Flying Aces beat the Magiro Pharmacy Road Runners, 12-9, in the Howard County Youth Program Poly League.
Lauren Abricht homered and Kristen Foster tripled twice to lead Regency Cleaners Fillies to a 14-11 win over the Neubauer Exxon Blue Bandits.
The Angels and the E.C. Lions Club Yellow Jackets played to a 21-21 tie; the Fashion Bug Red Barons edged the Capital Cake Blue Jays, 19-17; the Fillers defeated the Blue Jays, 25-8, and the Yellow Jackets defeated the Red Barons, 18-5.
Lacrosse
11-12 boys -- Kevin Boland scored four goals to lead the Howard County Cobra Midgets to a 23-0 win over Overlea on Saturday.
Other players contributing to the effort included Sam Hogg (three goals, two assists), Dave Paolisso (three goals, one assist), Jim Morrison (two goals, two assists), Andy Boston (two goals, one assist), Joe Cristaldi (two goals, one assist), Steve Berger (two goals), Mike Schmidt (two goals), Brian McDermott (one goal, one assist), Brooks Brumsted (one goal, one assist), Colin Snovell (one goal) and goalie Andy Garthoff (five saves).
10-under girls -- The Howard County Cobra Lightning were a victim of numbers in their game Saturday at St. James Academy. With only one substitute available, the Cobras dropped a 6-1 decision to St. James.
Center Kelly Knuuti tallied the only Howard goal, scoring early in the first half. Also playing well were goalies Lauren Winer (five saves) and Regan Miller (four saves).
Soccer
Under-9 boys -- Christopher Kennedy scored a second-half goal with an assist from Christopher McCullough, but the Western Howard County Thunder still came up short, losing a 5-1 decision to the Baltimore Football Club Sunday in a Baltimore Beltway League game at Buskey Park.
Thunder goalie Matt Showman stopped 26 shots and got defensive support from Danny Bowring, Eric Allen, Robby Brookfield and Evan Emshwiller. Bradley Costantino, Collin Hasty, Kevin Connors, Devin Keeney and Steven Rogers led the offense.
The loss was the second in four games for the Thunder, who in previous games scored a 7-0 win over the Parkville Soccer Club; lost, 7-0, to the Young Gunns and played to a 1-1 tie with Sacred Heart.
Under-13 boys -- The Columbia Soccer Club Blaze got goals from Aaron McKinley, Daniel Liparini and Tayseer Chowdhry en route to a 3-0 win over the Wheaton Wolves in a National Capital Soccer League game over the weekend.
The Blaze dominated at midfield, where McKinley, Conor Rector, Chris Hemerlein, Kenny Roberts, Danny Dworkin and Patrick Thomas controlled play. Mike Freitag and Terrell Gary helped out on defense, while Kevin Lyons and T.J. Clay contributed on offense.
10-year-old boys -- The Columbia Thunder played to a 3-3 tie over the weekend with MSI's A.C. Milan. Noah Berk scored two goals and Robert Tipton added the other. Tony Gatto and Eddie Yanacek picked up assists.
Defensively, Derrick Jamison and Matt Hashimoto led the effort, with Ben Brasso, Mark Johnson and Dave Silver providing support. Under-10 girls -- The Soccer Association of Columbia Dynamo scored its fifth shutout victory in as many games over the weekend with a 5-0 win over the Springfield Youth Club in a Washington Area Girls Soccer League contest.
Caitlin Jenkins and Allison Levine led the offense with two goals each, and Becky Ward scored the other goal.
The defense, led by Samantha Test and Kimi Mongello, held Springfield without a serious scoring threat for the entire game.
Under-11 girls -- The Columbia Fury lost to the MSI Falcons, 1-0, over the weekend before coming back to score a 4-0 shutout over the McLean Thunder.
Katie Elliott scored three goals in the win and Jessica Coulson added the other off a cross from Molly Sunderdick. Molly Walker, Alison West, Megan O'Grady, Nicole Roy-Harrison and keeper Jessie Obst all played well.
Under-16 girls -- The Columbia Spirit remains undefeated in its first season of under-19 Premier soccer after a 1-1 tie against the Bethesda Blizzard. Abby Bausman scored the Columbia team's only goal with 15 minutes to play. Forward Aimee Grahe and midfielders Michelle Clare, Lauren Molinaro and Alison Schuch also turned in strong games.
The Columbia Courage played to a scoreless tie against the Mount Airy Cavaliers over the weekend. Goalie Nyesha Ford sparkled in goal for the Courage, making a number of clutch second-half saves to preserve the tie, and Megan McCarthy, Kyle Rutkowski and Aime Kellner also played well.
10-11 girls -- The Centennial Blasters remained undefeated this past weekend with a 3-0 win over Oakland Mills in Soccer Association of Columbia action.
Maggie Via scored two goals and Shelly Sinclair netted the third, as the Blasters dominated the second half. Other key contributors on offense were Tara Molesky, Tricia Guarneri, Laura Chwirut and Jenny Zonarich.
Once they got the lead, defenders Megan Houck and Cindy Briggs helped keep it, using aggressive defense to preserve the shutout.
Goalie Erin Sisk, Megan Gates and Jessie Warfield played well for Oakland Mills.
Under-15 1/2 girls -- Angie Jefferson scored early in the first half to help the Columbia Cougars come away with a 1-1 tie against Severna Park.
The Cougars then had several more opportunities to break on top late in the game -- on shots by Natalie Hoover, Christa Dombrowsky, Carolyn Flowers and Emily Bielefeld -- but came up empty each time. Michele Osterberger played strong defense.
Under-11 girls -- The Columbia Condors dropped a 3-1 decision to the Bowie Bobcats over the weekend in the Washington Area Girls Soccer League.
The Condors took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Cathy James shot a bullet that was mishandled by the goalie and tapped in by Megan Donohue.
But from there, it was all Bobcats.
First, they scored the tying goal with seconds left in the first half, then added two more to take the lead in the second half.
If not for the strong play of Condors goalie Shannon Glisan, the margin could have been even wider. Shannon Binns and Lee McDuff gave her support on defense, while Lauren Blaney and Vanessa Neuworth contributed with strong play on offense.
Under-13 girls -- The Soccer Association of Columbia Cannonades had mixed success over the weekend, falling to Glyndon, 3-1, before coming back to defeat the Vista Vision, 5-1.
Alexia Vogler led the offensive effort in the win with two goals. Also for the victors, Katie Madden had a goal and an assist, Megan Moulding and Casey Finnegan had goals and Monica Serianni and Brooke Barcheski had assists.
Defensively, the team was led by Michelle Veach, Stacie Tokasz and Kelly Schnieder.
Baseball
9-10 -- It was a banner week for the White Sox of the Howard County Youth Program International League. They scored victories last week over the Cardinals, Dodgers and Expos by a combined score of 40-14.
In an 18-4 win over the Cardinals, Brandon Moore tripled and pitched two strong innings.
Matt Babcock had three hits and three RBIs, and Brian Sweich threw three scoreless innings with five strikouts is an 11-8 win over the Dodgers.
To wrap up the week, Moore doubled twice off the fence and Scott Black threw a runner out from the outfield in an 11-2 win over the Expos.
The Padres defeated the Pro Image of Columbia Mall Indians, 18-12, and the Angels, 17-9; the Pirates beat the Royals, 7-5, and played to an 11-11 tie with the Commercial and Farmers Bank Rangers; the Cardinals defeated the Twins, 14-3; the Royals and Reds played to a 7-7 tie; the Giants beat the Angels, 17-7; the Indians edged the Cedar Emergency Services Mets, 7-6; the Phillies beat the Benefits Resource Red Sox, 10-8; the Twins bested the Reds, 20-9; the Tigers topped the Cardinals, 8-5, and the Expos defeated the Tigers, 22-7.
13-14 -- Brendan Putz was 3-for-4 and started a 10-run rally with a grand slam as the Padres (3-1) defeated the Indians, 13-5, in the Howard County Youth Program Pony League.
Other standouts included Ryan Buckholtz, who pitched three strong innings, and Aron Selnick, who struck out four and homered.
The Angels won two games last week. Shortstop Pete Miller had a single, double, home run and five RBIs in a 13-9 win over the Mets, and Scott Frederick and Kris Kirwin combined to pitch five strong innings in a 13-2 win over the Giants.
