John R. Greiber, a Republican running for state's attorney, challenged incumbent Frank R. Weathersbee yesterday to debate him twice a month until the election, saying it is important for voters to see the differences between them.

Mr. Greiber and Mr. Weathersbee, a Democrat, have debated once already, even though the primary election to choose party nominees is not until September. But Mr. Greiber said he wants more face-to-face encounters.

"Crime is by far the No. 1 issue on voter's minds," Mr. Greiber said. "Neither of us should be gun shy about debating the other in public."

Mr. Weathersbee said he would likely debate Mr. Greiber again. But he said it doesn't make sense to commit to a specific number of debates until the July 5 filing deadline has passed and all the candidates for the position have announced their candidacy.

"We'll worry about that in the future," he said.
