Developers are violating county zoning law when they post advertising signs at certain street corners, but Carroll County commissioners agreed yesterday to let the developers police themselves.

Patrick Dail, a representative of the Home Builders Association of Maryland, said he has told developers that the practice violates local law and expects them to stop posting the signs.

The commissioners said they had received a few complaints from residents about the small, colorful signs posted on weekends to direct people to new developments and open houses.

Many of the signs are posted on state rights of way, which violates state law and county zoning law, said General Services Director J. Michael Evans.

The commissioners agreed to wait about a month before deciding whether to cite developers who continue to post signs.
