Police commander in Westminster retires

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Major Richard W. Janney Jr., former commander of the Westminster barracks, retired recently after more than 34 years in the Maryland State Police, according to Lt. Greg Shipley, public affairs officer.

Major Janney commanded the Westminster barracks from July 1982 until his promotion to captain in 1984. His first assignment at the Westminster barracks was as a corporal in 1969. He joined the state police in July 1959.

He had served as commander of the central region of the Field Operations Bureau since 1993.

The major was honored with a retirement ceremony at which hundreds of his fellow troopers and well-wishers filled the Westminster fire hall to reflect on his career. Major Janney lives in northeastern Carroll County with his wife, Carol.
