The eighth inning yesterday was a bad one all around for the Orioles, particularly for Brad Pennington. Ken Griffey hit a three-run homer (above), then trotted around the bases as Pennington hung his head (right). But that wasn't all that went wrong in the inning:
Mariners eighth
With the Orioles leading 6-3, Jamie Moyer yielded two singles and a walk to load the bases. Pennington relieved. His first throw to Griffey was a wild pitch, allowing Darren Bragg to score. Griffey hit the next pitch onto Eutaw Street for a three-run homer and a 7-6 Mariners lead. Mark Eichhorn relieved Pennington, got two outs, but reloaded the bases. Jim Poole got the third out.
Orioles eighth
Rafael Palmeiro singled. Cal Ripken bunted for a single down the third base line, Palmeiro advancing to second. Chris Hoiles missed a bunt attempt, and Palmeiro was picked off second. Hoiles struck out. Lonnie Smith grounded out.
