Pete and Elise Crofoot of Glen Burnie
Volunteer work: About 15 to 25 multiple sclerosis patients meet each Friday at the Fair Lanes Southdale in Pasadena, from autumn to mid-spring, to enjoy a few hours of bowling. Mr. and Mrs. Crofoot are among the volunteers who help the bowlers.
Known as the Hopeful Wheelers, the group has been meeting for 26 years. Mrs. Crofoot has been volunteering with the group for more than 20 years. Her husband, Pete, has been with the group since he retired in 1988.
Most of the bowlers use walkers, canes or are in wheelchairs. The Crofoots help in anyway they can: retrieving the bowling balls, helping with ball control, in some instances using their body language to coax a ball in the right direction.
They share the bowlers' enthusiasm and joy as the ball hits the pins, and they provide encouragement even when there is a gutter ball.
As Mr. Crofoot says, "One lady here I help is blind. Next week we're bowling against them, so I'll be wearing a blindfold, and she just bowled a 79!"
Responding to when they might consider retiring from this volunteer effort, Mr. Crofoot says, "I'll keep doing it as long as the good Lord allows." Mrs. Crofoot says, "Never."
In addition to this volunteer work, the Crofoots and another couple give weekly singing performances at senior citizen centers and nursing homes throughout the county. They have done this for five years.
Each summer the Crofoots invite the people they take to the bowling alley to their home in Sun Valley for a pool party. Though many cannot swim, Mr. Crofoot said that nonetheless, "It's a fun day."
About the volunteers: The Crofoots have lived in the county for more than 35 years and are members of the Marley Methodist Church.
Mr. Crofoot is retired from Cross Auto parts and is on the board of advisers at the Arnold Senior Center. Mrs. Crofoot worked for 20 years at the Montgomery Ward store in Glen Burnie.
