Chris Mergardt scored four goals and Franklin & Marshall (7-5, 4-1) held Western Maryland (5-7, 2-2) scoreless for nearly three quarters for a 16-4 victory in a Centennial Conference men's lacrosse game yesterday in Westminster.

Mergardt had two goals each in the second and fourth quarters. Don Gervais added three goals and two assists for Franklin & Marshall, ranked 20th in the this week's Division III poll. Franklin & Marshall, winners of five of their last six games, shut out Western Maryland until Ken Higgs (Westminster) scored with just over a minute left in the third quarter.

Dean Coccia (Chesapeake-AA) had two goals and one assist for the Green Terror.

* James Madison 14, Towson State 3: Danyle Heffernan scored six goals and had one assist as No. 11 James Madison (7-8) defeated Towson State (2-9) in Harrisonburg, Va. Laura Whelan added three goals for the Dukes.

James Madison opened the game by scoring six of the first seven goals. The Tigers received goals from three different players.

* Washington & Lee 9, Frostburg State 8: The Generals (7-5) used a balance offensive attack to top host Frostburg State (4-4). Paula Mita, Angie Carrington and Nicole Ripken each scored a pair of goals to lead Washington & Lee.

Carrington's second goal of the game came with just 4:16 left to play to give the Generals a 9-7 lead that Frostburg State couldn't overcome. Carrington stole a midfield clearing pass from Frostburg goaltender Laura Becker and raced in for the goal.

Alison Braue responded less than a minute later, but the Generals were able to retain possession for the final two minutes to preserve the victory.

Jen Gray led the Bobcats with three goals.

Generals goalie Sarah Smith made eight saves, and Becker stopped nine shots for Frostburg.
