Knapp's goal in overtime lifts No. 20 Army past No. 11 Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Brian Knapp scored just 44 seconds into overtime as visiting and No. 20 Army (6-5) beat No. 11 Hofstra (6-4), 15-14, in a men's lacrosse game yesterday. The loss severely hurt the Flying Dutchman's chances at making the 12-team NCAA tournament.

After trailing 12-6 and being shut out in the third quarter, Hofstra outscored the Black Knights 8-2 in the fourth to send the game into overtime. Junior midfielder Michael Colon and sophomore Rob Manning led Army with three goals apiece.

Andy Carlson had three goals and five assists for Hofstra.

* Franklin & Marshall 16, Western Maryland 4: Chris Mergardt scored four goals and Franklin & Marshall (7-5, 4-1) held Western Maryland (5-7, 2-2) scoreless for nearly three quarters in a Centennial Conference game in Westminster.

Mergardt had two goals each in the second and fourth quarters. Don Gervais added three goals and two assists for Franklin & Marshall, ranked 20th in this week's Division III poll.

Women

* UMBC 13, Richmond 11: Junior attackman Alison Zaetz scored four goals and senior midfielder Laura Bradley had three to lift UMBC (9-4) past Richmond (5-10) at UMBC Stadium.

The Retrievers scored the first six goals of the game, including two each by Bradley and Zaetz. The Spiders closed to within 8-6, but sophomore attackman Emily Petrlik scored two goals within a minute to spark a 5-0 run.

* James Madison 14, Towson State 3: Danyle Heffernan scored six goals and had one assist as No. 11 James Madison (7-8) defeated Towson State (2-9) in Harrisonburg, Va. Laura Whelan added three goals for the Dukes.

* Washington & Lee 9, Frostburg State 8: The Generals (7-5) used a balance offensive attack to top host Frostburg State (4-4). Paula Mita, Angie Carrington and Nicole Ripken each scored a pair of goals to lead Washington & Lee.
