Mariners update
The Mariners are expected to contend in the four-team American League West, but they're off to a slow start (5-9), including yesterday's 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees. Part of the reason for Seattle's woes lies in the bullpen, which has blown all three save chances this year and is the only AL group not to have a
save. The Mariners' hitters have done their job, with 19 homers in their past 11 games. The Seattle outfield of Ken Griffey, Jay Buhner and Eric Anthony has 12 of those 19 home runs. Salkeld, who made his major-league debut last September in Baltimore, will make his first start of 1994 tomorrow night.
Orioles update
McDonald can take over the staff lead in wins tonight, and Fernandez shoots for his first win tomorrow in his home debut. The Orioles will have two more home dates after this series before embarking on their first extended road trip of the year -- eight games in seven days in California, Seattle and Oakland. Rafael Palmeiro, likely the only left-handed hitter in the lineup tonight, has a career .316 average (6-for-19, one home run) off Fleming, and Harold Baines is batting .700 (7-for-10, one home run) against Hibbard.
