Softball
Junior -- The Aces, who finished first in the division last year, got this season off to a good start in beating the Firebirds, 17-9.
The Aces broke open a 4-3 game with a four-run fourth in which Beth Smith hit a home run, and Lauren Henry added a three-run homer.
Henry homered four times in the game and had seven RBIs. Sandy Hart was 5-for-5 for the Aces and Smith, 4-for-5.
The Firebirds' Lindsay Morris and Lindsay Pettingill each hit two-run homers; Pettingill was 3-for-4. Shelley Dinterman had two RBIs.
Ponytail -- Karen Herbert's three-run homer highlighted a four-run fourth inning that carried the Panthers over the Jets, 17-11.
Herbert's two-run home run and April Philips' bases-empty shot were the big hits in the Panthers' five-run fifth. Herbert was 5-for-5 with eight RBIs and Philips 4-for-5.
Abby Lindsay hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Crowns an 9-8 extra-inning win over the Fillies.
Niki Litchfield, who was 3-for-4 for the Crowns, had tied the game at 8, with a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kasey Owings had four doubles and scored three runs.
The Waves had 19 hits to beat the Bombers, 28-4. Jordan Torbeck was 4-for-5 with two home runs and two doubles. Lizzie Curtin went 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring four times; Rachel Flint was 4-for-5 with four runs scored for the Waves.
Claire Panek went 3-for-3 and scored four runs for the Waves, and Jamie Dodge drove in six runs, going 4-for-4. Waves pitcher Kim Mathias yielded five hits and didn't allow a walk.
Megan Straehle went 2-for-3 for the Bombers, with a run scored and an RBI.
The Cardinals came back to beat the Orange Crush, 12-4. The Crush scored four runs in the first on Jerri Amass' two-run single and RBIs by Kate Francis and Lauren Scott.
But Katie Stephan's two-run homer in the fourth tied the game at 4. Danielle Charnak then had a grand slam in a seven-run fifth inning for the Cardinals.
Christine Muffington was 3-for-3 and scored three runs for the Cardinals.
The Edgers beat the Nuggets, 33-19. Kellie Wood's two-run double highlighted a nine-hit, eight-run first inning for the Edgers.
Kris Roulette hit a two-run double and Sindi Stem a two-run triple, to key a six-run sixth inning that gave the Edgers a 25-16 lead.
Roulette went 4-for-5 and had a three-run homer. Stem, who also went 4-for-5, had a bases-empty shot. Kerry Cromey was 4-for-5 and Amanda Bray was 5-for-5 for the Edgers.
Bridgett Sheehy and Krystal Dixon paced the Nuggets' attack; each was 4-for-4 with a three-run home run.
The Sharks jumped to an 8-0 lead after two innings and went on to beat the Fawns, 14-2. Mandi Earp hit a two-run homer for the Sharks.
The Sharks' Jameson Cowan went 2-for-3, scoring three runs, and Nicole Hypes added a 3-for-3 effort and scored twice.
Kayleen Smith and Kyrica Frisby accounted for the Fawns' runs
with homers.
Bantam -- The Flames rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to beat the Dolphins, 8-6.
Karen Engle's two-run home run and Beth Smith's bases-empty shot overcame a 6-5 Dolphins lead. Engles, who was 3-for-4, had hit a three-run home run earlier in the game.
First baseman Smith also had a key defensive play in the fourth inning, when she caught a line drive and doubled off a Dolphins runner at first.
Erin Young's two-run triple highlighted a five-run Dolphins first. Brittany Beck was 3-for-3 and scored two runs for the Dolphins.
Kelly Amass hit a grand slam, and pitcher Jamie Hunt threw a six-hitter to lead the Ravens over the Twinkees, 16-1. Brittany Oliver went 3-for-3 and had three RBIs for the Ravens.
Megan Bray was 3-for-3 for the Twinkees.
The Stingers used a strong defense in downing the Bumblebees, 6-2. Stingers pitcher Jamie Schlipper allowed only four hits, and her team turned a triple play behind her.
that play, shortstop Angel Aversa caught a line drive, tossed to second baseman Laura Vigliotti to catch the runner off second base, and Vigliotti relayed to first baseman Casey Brangle for the final out.
Hollie Cushen was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Stingers.
Bumblebees pitcher Jenny Utz hit a two-run homer, and Mandi Hepler had two hits.
The Gems scored in every inning to beat the Blue Jays, 21-9. Nicci Waltz was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer, and Joanna Eckenrode added a bases-empty shot for the Gems.
Missy Hughes was 5-for-5, with four RBIs and four runs scored, and Kelly Roulette was 4-for-4. Shannon Hunt went 4-for-5 and scored four runs.
Freedom Optimist lacrosse 12-14 Division -- Mike Rabinovitz saved his
fourth goal of the game for sudden death as White nipped Gray, 8-7.
Tim Chairs chipped in with three goals for White, Adam Reaver added one and Kevin Roy had an assist.
Tres Johnson and Will Gunther each scored three goals for Grey. Klayton Carroll added one.
Gold edged Orange, 13-12, despite an eight-goal, three-assist effort from Robert Onda.
Lee Windsor had five goals and one assist and Jason Veneziani scored twice for Gold. Pete Schaeffer also scored twice, and Brendan Floyd had one goal for Gold.
Jay Sureja, Mark Marger, David Martin and Drew Gibson each tallied once for Orange; Travis Spampinato added a goal and
two assists.
Mike Pearsall scored three goals and dished off three assists, as Black beat Maroon, 9-1.
Tom Freedman had two goals and an assist for Black; Tim Hymiller had three assists.
Black's Tim Kosygana, Ryan Lynch and Jared Atwell scored one goal apiece, while Kosygana also had two assists. Tim Muse assisted on four goals for Black.
Chris Sraver scored Maroon's goal.
9-11 Division -- John Muluri scored in overtime to lead Black over Orange, 7-6. Chris Gooding had three goals for Black. Anthony Ashcenbrenner, Brandon Rogers and Mark Donohough each added a score.
Orange's Chad Parker scored a game-high five goals, Justin Waagbo scored one and Kevin Meyers added an assist.
Grey beat White, 14-3. Eric Vizzini scored four goals for the winners, and Seth Perrine and Dan Stansbury each added three.
Grey's Owen Hubbs had two goals and two assists, Jordan Bosley and Chet Cairns each had a goal and an assist.
Matt Seivold, Doran Buppert and Richard Scrivener had one goal apiece for White.
Circle lacrosse Grey blanked Red, 7-0, as Pat Wyett paced the winners' attack with five goals. Robert Etzler and Shawn Hykes added goals for Grey.
Chris Schviener scored seven goals to lead Gold to a 9-4 victory over Green. Brigette Murray added two scores for Gold. Eric Shadoff and Brayton Myers each scored two goals for Green.
Maryland Junior lacrosse girls -- Gamber held on to beat Kelly Post, 9-7, in a Junior B contest.
Gamber's Courtney Bierne scored three goals, including an
insurance goal after Kelly Post had
narrowed the Gamber lead to 8-7.
Abby Cooper also scored three times for Gamber, and Becky Buppert, Candice Calderon and Michele Eckes each added a goal.
11-12 girls -- Gamber's Junior B team dropped a 13-7 game to Catonsville. Jessica Lehmann scored three goals and and had an assist for Gamber, while Claire Panek, Stephanie Roscher and Kellie Gombeski each added two scores. Roscher also contributed two assists. Gamber's Sara Sciaretta played well
defensively.
13-14 boys -- Gamber played airtight second-half defense and held off Edgewood, 5-2, in a Junior B game. Defensemen Pat Malinowski and Jesse Jones played strongly on the backline for Gamber, and goalkeeper Mike Wojtaszek played well in the net. John Ritcey paced Gamber's attack with three goals.
National Capital Soccer League The Seneca Greyhounds and Potomac Internationals played to a tie. Brad Hopwood's penalty kick put Seneca ahead, 1-0, early in the second half. Potomac, however, tied the game with a minute remaining.
Stopper Jeff Muschik and goalkeeper Steve Heller were outstanding on defense for Seneca.
Gymnastics
The Perna Gymnastics Club's Level VIII squad recently traveled Chesapeake High School in Essex to compete in the state championship meet.
Cindy Reese scored 8.8 on vaulting (tied for third), 8.0 on floor and 31.30 all-around.
Emily Linder had 8.30 on vault, balance beam and floor and 32.15 all-around.
Becky Fuhrman scored 8.75 on vault (tie for seventh), 8.70 on beam, 8.75 on floor and 34.25 all-around.
Perna's Level IX team also competed in state competitions at Chesapeake High.
Kristen Totten scored 8.75 on vault, 9.15 on floor (tie for second) and 34.375 all-around.
Jessica Groszkowski had 8.45 on vault and 31.60 all-around. Shannon Wright scored 8.75 on vault and an all-around of 34.125.
Erica Ebaugh had an 8.35 on balance beam, 8.95 on floor and 32.60 all-around.
Totten and Wright qualified for the Class IX regionals.
