Gymnastics
Five members of the Gymnastics Plus boys team qualified for the United States Gymnastics Federation Junior Olympic National Championships at a regional meet over the weekend in Allentown, Pa.
Tim Bulleri, Wes Cress, Paul Mathews and Kenny Hockykco in Class 2, and Tom Kutz in Class 3 all qualified for th May 4-8 meet in Augusta, Ga.
Basketball
Over-30 men -- The Knudsen Homes basketball team went to Ocean City over the weekend and returned home to Ellicott City with a Maryland Recreation and Parks Limited State Championship under its belt.
Knudsen went 5-1 against the 22-team field, defeating a Maryland All-Stars team that included Gene Smith and Ralph Dalton from the Georgetown University national championship team, 83-71, in Sunday's title game.
Leading the victors were 6-foot-6 former Portland Trailblazer Ronnie Murphy (17 points), 6-6 former European pro Anthony Robbins (16), 6-2 former James Madison standout Jeff Cross (10), 6-7 UMBC standout Rick Moreland (eight) and 6-7 former Notre Dame player Mike Muldowney (eight).
Other team members include Mark Hammond, former CBA player Dan Ruland, Craig Silbert, player-coach Pat McKindles, Fred Teodosio, Dennis Pope and Howard Jones.
Soccer
Under-13 girls -- The Columbia Connection played to a 1-1 tie with Gunston before losing to the Seneca Sharks, 2-1, over the weekend. Emily Timm and Michelle Kincaid scored goals for the Columbia team.
Under-13 boys -- The Columbia Blaze used a total team effort to win their National Capital Soccer League spring opener over the Bowie Bulldogs, 1-0, Sunday.
Defenders Andy Hekimian, Matt Wallace, Jeff Ebaugh and Robby Falk shut down an aggressive Bulldogs offense all afternoon, and goalies Mike Martin and B.J. Cradlin chipped in with some key saves.
Striker Tayseer Chowdhry scored the winning goal in the second half, shooting a bullet past the Bowie goalkeeper after taking a pass from Conor Rector.
Under-10 girls -- The Soccer Association of Columbia Dynamo advanced in Maryland Cup play over the weekend with a 3-0 victory over Hereford and a 1-0 decision over the Sterling Classics.
Caitlin Jenkins, Becky Ward, Melissa Workman and Ashley Pollock scored goals. 13-year-old girls -- The Cannonades, a
Columbia Soccer Association 1981 travel team, won their first game of the Washington Area Girls Soccer League spring season, defeating the Vista Vision, 3-1.
Trailing, 1-0, the Cannonades scored three unanswered goals to take control of the game. First, Monica Serianni scored off a pass from Casey Finnegan to tie the game at 1-1 at halftime. Then, Finnegan gave her team the lead off a pass from Michelle Jenkins, and Amanda Zackmann finished off the scoring with an unassisted goal.
Under-16 girls -- The Columbia Courage began their spring Washington Area Girls Soccer League season in powerful fashion, scoring two 3-0 victories over the weekend.
Saturday's win against the MSI Tigers, Brooke James, Christina Eberhart and Kyle Rutkowski scored while Jenny O'Rourke and Alika Crew picked up assists. Samm Oehl set up the final two goals with well-placed corner kicks.
Sunday, the team defeated the Chantilly Panthers as Crew scored twice and assisted James on the third goal. Shanti Smith, Kristin Midura and Kim Austin also picked up assists.
Under-12 girls -- Amy Rappaport's second-half goal off an assist from Sara Gibbs gave the Columbia Eagles a 1-1 tie against the Arlington Fireballs in a Washington Area Girls Soccer League game over the weekend.
Also playing well for the Eagles were Kerry Sokol, Kai Freeman, Nikki Brown and Kellan Hoover.
Under-11 girls -- The Columbia Condors had their highest scoring total of the young season against McLean over the weekend. But so did the Hurricanes.
The teams played to a 4-4 tie in a Washington Area Girls Soccer
League game.
Lauren Blaney scored two goals, and Allison Broglie and nTC Shannon Bliss added one apiece for the Condors, with assists going to Megan Donohue and Vanessa Neuworth. The Columbia team held a 4-2 lead before the Hurricanes scored twice in the final minutes to tie.
Under-16 girls -- The Columbia Spirit -- playing in the under-19 Premier Division of the Washington Area Girls Soccer League -- settled for a scoreless tie with the Columbia Chargers last weekend before scoring a 1-0 win over the Vista United this past weekend.
Abby Bausman scored the lone Spirit goal, and the team's strong defense helped stop a barrage of scoring attempts by the United, who were aided by a strong, gusty wind in the first half.
Under-15 1/2 girls -- The Columbia Cougars lost to the Braddock Road Blues, 4-1, over the weekend.
Natalie Hoover scored the Cougars' only goal off a crossing pass Carolyn Flowers. Also playing
well in defeat were Carrie Winkler, Lee Custer, Monica Dodd and goalies Laura Fawley and Kate MacFarlane, who helped keep the game close until the final minutes.
10-year-old boys -- The Columbia Thunder started off its spring season on a positive note Saturday with a 2-0 win over the D.C. Stoddert.
Mark Johnson and Robert Tipton scored goals, assisted by Tony Gatto and Ben Brasso.
On Sunday, however, the Thunder lost to the Laurel Wildcats, 3-2.
The Thunder took a 2-0 lead on goals by Johnson, assisted by Tipton, and Gatto, but the Wildcats then scored three unanswered goals to steal the win.
10-11 girls -- The Centennial Blasters of the Soccer Association of Columbia improved to 2-0 with a 5-2 victory over the South Carroll Devils this past weekend.
Maggie Via led the offense with two goals, and Laura Chwirut, Hope Zelinger and Ali Woods rounded out the scoring with one goal each.
Becky Podobnik and Chrissy Murphy scored for the Devils.
Baseball
Over-30 -- The Columbia Cardinals, sponsored by the Rounding Third Sports Center of Elkridge, split the first two games of the season in the Chesapeake Men's Senior Baseball League.
Sloppy defense cost the Cardinals. They made 14 errors in the two games that led to 16 runs.
On Thursday, the Cardinals defeated the Lawmen Rangers of Anne Arundel County, 16-11, at Arundel High School. John Canterna was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Tom O'Neil was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, Henry Wong was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Pete Hughes was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Reliever Jim DeCorso picked up the win with four innings of work.
The Cardinals then lost to Harmans, 10-7, Sunday at Joe Cannon Stadium. They held leads of 6-4 and 7-6 late in the game only to allow four runs (three unearned) down the stretch.
Leading the offense was Hughes (2-for-3, two doubles, RBI), and Wong, Kevin Young and Jim Carney (2-for-3, RBI) also doubled.
9-10 -- The International League White Sox pulled out two one-run victories last week in the Howard County Youth Program.
On Thursday, the White Sox staged a come-from-behind victory, scoring five runs late in the game to turn a 10-6 deficit into an 11-10 win over the Reds.
Center fielder Brian Sweichhad two hits and two RBIs, first baseman Brandon Moore had a single, double and scored three runs, second baseman
Scott Black scored twice and pitcher Ryan Justice picked up the victory and smacked the game-winning hit.
Then on Saturday, the Sox rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the second inning for a 7-6 win over the Padres.
Justice and Ryan Orndorff homered, catcher Matt Babcock had two hits and threw a runner out on a stolen base attempt, John Droege reached base twice and center fielder Alex Sherman made a diving catch of a line drive.
The Expos defeated the Pro Image of Columbia Mall Indians, 5-1; the Angels beat the Expos, 14-7; the Padres beat the Benefits Resource Inc. Red Sox, 16-12; the Twins defeated the Pirates,
11-10, and the Royals beat the Phillies, 14-3.
-- Chad Robbins and Marc Morgan combined to pitch six strong innings as the Bumble Bee Seafood Dodgers defeated the Donald and Sandra Garrett Yankees, 5-3, in the Howard County Youth Program Minor League.
Shortstop Phil Boccuzzi had a double and provided excellent defense and outfielder Jeremiah Shaeffer singled and had two RBIs for the victors.
The Cardinals and Tigers played to a 10-10 tie. Collin Stumpf, Brendan Taylor and Michael Ostroff played well for the Cardinals, while Nick Hartman, Kyle Jensen and Matt Lewis had strong games for the Tigers.
11-12 -- Third baseman Jason Peay doubled to drive in a run and pitcher Steve Schaeffer struck out five in the final two innings to lead the Twins to a 3-1 win over the Bradford Federal Savings Bank Reds in Major League action Saturday in the Howard County Youth Program.
13-14 -- Catcher Bryan Warner tagged out a runner at the plate late in the game to help preserve the Dodgers' 2-1 victory over the White Sox in the Howard County Youth Prgram Pony League.
Other Dodgers standouts were pitcher Ryan Burges, who hurled two scoreless innings in relief, and second baseman Kyle Laws, who singled and later stole home.
The Padres defeated the Red Sox, 3-2. Aron Selnick pitched three shutout innings and drove in the winning run with a triple.
The Angels also handled the Expos, 7-2, as Scott Frederick and Kris Kirwan combined to pitch six strong innings and Mark Schoenfelder had a key hit with the bases loaded.
