Gilman keeps on rolling, 11-2

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Gilman is a team on a roll, and yesterday the top-ranked Greyhounds rolled all over host No. 6 Calvert Hall, 11-2, in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference game.

Senior midfielder Mark Cornes had a game-high four goals and two assists for Gilman, which got goals from seven different players.

Cornes started the scoring 1:11 into the game when he took a feed from junior attackman Lorne Smith and put it past Calvert Hall goalie Strider Dickson.

By halftime the Greyhounds (6-0, 4-0) had built an 8-0 lead, and it could have been worse if not for a couple of nice saves by Dickson.

"Everything is coming together right now," said Cornes, who hadall of his goals in the first half. "The offense and defense are working well together, and everything is clicking."

Gilman got another strong game from its defense, which was again without regular starter David Biddison. The junior has mononucleosis, and his status for the rest of the season is uncertain.

The Greyhounds didn't miss Biddison yesterday, as they shut out Calvert Hall (4-5, 2-3) for the first 24:34 of the game.

Gilman's ride forced numerous errant passes and dropped balls by the Cardinals, and the Greyhounds' man-down defense killed three penalty situations during which Calvert Hall couldn't even get off a shot.

"It's like punching a [time] clock," said Gilman coach John Tucker. "We come in and try to play hard for 40 minutes, and we did that today.

"I was very proud of the effort."

Sophomore attackman Chase Martin added two goals for the Greyhounds, and senior attackman Mike Allan had a goal and three assists.

Yesterday's game came between wins over No. 2 St. Paul's and No. 3 St. Mary's and a Tuesday match-up against No. 4 Loyola, but the Greyhounds were not worried about letting their guard down.

"I haven't seen us let down yet," said Cornes. "Everyone is gunning for us, so every game is a challenge."

His coach agreed.

"I'm not concerned about this group of kids overlooking anyone," said Tucker.
