An Arnold man was undergoing a psychiatric evaluation at Anne Arundel Medical Center yesterday after barricading himself his home and threatening to commit suicide, county police said.

John Echaues, 30, of the 1200 block of Seminole Drive, called police at 11:34 a.m. and told dispatchers he had a gun and wanted to kill himself, said Officer Randy Bell, a police spokesman.

Officers went to the community off College Parkway, evacuated some nearby residents and started negotiating with Mr. Echaues.

He told police he would come out of the house if they agreed to take him to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. The officers agreed, and Mr. Echaues walked out of the house at 12:04 p.m.

Inside the house police found an unloaded rifle and ammunition. Apparently, Mr. Echaues was upset over his recent separation from his wife, said Officer Bell.
