* Under-19 girls -- The Severna Park Alliance opened its spring season on Sunday in the Washington Area Girls Soccer League under-19 Premier Division with a 0-0 tie to the defending Under-17 Maryland Cup champion Bethesda Blizzard.

Severna Park coach Tom Ehart praised midfielders Shelley Seivert (Severna Park) and Amy Adams (Broadneck), along with his defensive unit of Jessica Hines (Severna Park), Kristin Buckley (St. Mary's), Carrie Budzinski (Severna Park), Lindsay Waxler (Wilde Lake) and goalkeeper Erin Hon (St. Mary's).

Hon made 12 saves, including a shot from point-blank range late in the game, which assured the tie.

* Under-12 boys -- The Arundel Soccer Association Strike Force upped their Anne Arundel Youth Soccer League record to 2-0 with a 6-0 win last week over St. Jane.

Rick Swain led with three goals. Dustin Page, Brett Bosher and Nick Haramis each added a goal for the winners.

Michael Godfrey and Kevin Funk each were credited with an assist and Strike Force goalie Jacob Crouse helped make it a shutout.

* Under-14 girls -- The Arundel Soccer Association Jets tied Annapolis, 2-2, last week. Lindsey Stapleton and Erin Hartman provided the goals for the Jets (1-0-1). Katie Burrow and &L; Stephanie Self contributed with solid play on both ends of the field.

* Under-10 -- The Arundel Soccer Association Thunderbirds played the St. Jane Panthers to a scoreless tie last weekend in an AAYSL matchup. Playing well for the Thunderbirds despite not scoring were David Drummond, Steven Williams and Rickey Posinsky.

The ASA Rockets downed Arthur Slade, 6-0, improving their record to 2-0.

Joe Griffen and Matthew Bury scored two goals each for the Rockets and Kenny Roberts and Rachel Jackowski scored one apiece. Also playing well for the Rockets were Robbie Self and Richard Burke.

Basketball

* 15-and-under girls -- The Chesapeake Hurricanes recently captured the championship at the Boo Williams Basketball Tournament in Hampton, Va.

"We played great defense and came together as a team during this tournament," said Chesapeake coach John Foran, whose team competed in a bracket with 16 of the nation's top teams. "We proved we can play with anybody."

The Hurricanes opened the tournament by defeating defending-tournament champion Chicago, 56-54. Next, against New York they got off to a 28-4 first-quarter lead before winning, 66-35. They won their final game of pool play by defeating Connecticut, 52-45.

In the four-team championship round, the Hurricanes defeated last year's National Amateur Athletic Union champion Oxon Hill of Maryland, 48-39, and later claimed the tournament title by nipping Ohio, 38-34.

The Hurricanes were led by Nikki Teasley of St.

John's Prospect Hall, who was named tournament Most Valuable Player for her 73 points, 25 assists and 45 rebounds in five games. In addition, Melanie Morris from Seton Keough was selected to the All-Tournament team after racking up 43 points.

Also contributing heavily for Chesapeake were: Jennifer Holmes of Severna Park (34 points, 45 rebounds), Tara Foran of St. Mary's (23 points, 20 rebounds), Alicia Mosley of Mount Hebron (22 points, 15 rebounds), Kelleye Townsend of Hammond (21 points, 17 boards) and Katie Graw of Severn (14 points, 20 rebounds).

Angela Kennedy and Shannon Henley added 10 and eight points, respectively, for the Hurricanes and Monique Jennings (Severn) and Stephanie Paxson (Spalding) each added six.

* 16-and-under girls -- The Anne Arundel County-based Maryland Waves didn't enjoy as much success at the Boo Williams Tournament.

The Waves lost their opener by a point to Urbana, Ohio, but came back and defeated Roanoke, Va., 64-38, and the Philadelphia Belles, 68-45, to capture first place in their pool.

On Sunday, the Waves drew last year's 15-and-under AAU national champion Western Pennsylvania Bruins and lost, 63-43, in the single-elimination round.

Chanel Wright of Western led the Waves with 81 points in the four games, followed by Tikki Nicholson of Hammond with 54, Tameka Harrison of Hammond with 44, Sandy Jenkin of Severna Park with 27 and Lisa Jackson of Western with 12.

Lacrosse

* Midget boys -- The Severna Park Green Hornets opened their season with a 3-2 overtime win over the host Davidsonville Gators in a steady rain on Sunday.

The Gators opened with a quick 2-0 lead and held the Hornets scoreless until the third quarter when Steve Kelly put Severna Park on the board with an unassisted goal.

Severna Park attackman Mike Cosper sent the game into overtime with the tying goal on a feed from fellow attackman Mac Chase with two minutes remaining in regulation.

The Hornets got the game-clinching goal on a fast-break assist from midfielder Jerry Cornett to Chase 1:40 into the sudden-death period.

The Severna Park defense was led by David Raush, Starke Muller and goalie Joe Kenworthy (12 saves). Attackman Drew Pfaff filled in for Kenworthy briefly and was credited with four saves in preserving the Hornet win.

Acrobatics & gymnastics Triple-winner Melissa McGuffin of Crofton led the MultiSport acrobatics team at the Spring Invitational recently at Gymnastics Plus in Columbia.

McGuffin's score of 9.30 on her second tumbling pass helped her clinch the gold in the Novice I tumbling competition for girls ages 13-18. She teamed up with Lizzy Krauss to win the Novice Women's Pairs event and finished the meet with a first place in the Novice Women's Trio event with Kristen Cilento and Julia Dykstra.

Double winners for MultiSport were Dykstra, Melissa Snow, Meredith Carpenter, Tom Hamblin and Melissa Scalley.

MultiSport tumblers combined for 16 first-place awards in the meet that had 57 tumblers and 56 acrobatic teams from Maryland, Virginia and Washington.

Barlow's Gymnastics of Annapolis recently played host to the 1994 Maryland United States Gymnastics Federation Level 10 Girls Gymnastics Championships. The best gymnasts from the state competed from 10 teams to claim individual awards as well as team trophies.

Competing from Barlow's were Kirsty, 17, Fulton of Mitchellville, Karen Newhard, 16, of Gambrills and Lori Bernia, 13, of Annapolis.

Fulton placed first on beam (9.00), third on floor (8.90), fourth on -- bars (8.80), fifth on vault (8.95) and was second in the all-around (35.65). Bernia placed third on beam with a 9.03.

The three gymnasts will compete at the USGF Level 10 Regional Championships presented by Gym-Beez of Downingtown, Pa.

Cathy Schnell of Annapolis and Stephanie Thielen competed at Baltimore County Gymnastics in their last meet before the state Level 6 and 7 championships at the end of this month.

Schnell placed first on beam (9.65) and floor (9.5), second on bars (9.3) and third all-around with 36.60. Thielen placed fourth .. on beam (9.2), sixth on vault (9.1) and seventh all-around with 34.95.

Senior volleyball Norwood Car Center won its fourth consecutive Pasadena Senior Volleyball League championship by taking six straight in the playoffs and finishing with an overall record of 53-13.

Norwood defeated Mayflower Movers in the final by scores of 15-3, 15-6, 15-3.

Norwood Car Center, which is comprised of Doug Ripple, George Kelch, Fenn Stallsmith, Paul Zimmerman, Ron Ellecamp, Lou Peterson, Bill Prunkl and Tim Nulty, will compete in the Maryland Senior Olympics this fall with the hope of advancing to the Senior National Olympics.

Swimming

Sixty-seven swimmers from defending champion Severna Park rTC YMCA will compete in the four-day YMCA Masters National Championships that begins today in Indianapolis. The swimmers range in age from 20 to 81.

Severna Park won the championship the past two years, both in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The team's chief challenger this year is host Jordan YMCA, which has 90 swimmers.

A dozen members of the Naval Academy Junior Swim Club competed on the Maryland State Zone Team at the Zone Championships conducted Easter weekend at Princeton University.

Patrick Donlin of Hillsmere set a zone record in the 200-yard backstroke (1 minute, 53.62 seconds) during the preliminaries, earning the first Junior National cut of his career. He placed first in the evening finals with a time of 1:54.62. He also finished third in the 100 backstroke in 53.65.

Finishing in the top three were Erin McCauley, who took third in the 200 breast in 2:26.55, and Chelsea Hastings, who finished third in the 100 IM in 1:09.63.

Also competing in the finals for Navy were Travis Brandon (100 breast, 59.73, fourth), Rich Slingluff (200 butterfly, 1:56.82, fifth; 100 fly, 53.33, sixth), Alex Golod (200 free, 2:14.05, fifth), April Pish (200 fly, 2:13.88, seventh) and Hastings (200 IM, 2:30.55, eighth).

Other Navy Junior members of the Maryland State Team were Billy Schultz, Elizabeth Lavell and Chris Hussey.

Five members of the Naval Academy Junior Swim Club qualified to compete at the United States Swimming Junior Nationals last month at the University of Michigan.

After four days of competition, Navy led the Maryland teams with 121 points and finished second behind Swim Atlanta with 182. Maryland's Curl Burke Swim Club was third with 116, followed by the North Baltimore Aquatic Club in 31st with 31 points and the UMBC Retrievers in 45th place with 13 points.

Seventeen-year-old Amy Betz of Annapolis recorded her best times in all five of her events. She earned a new Senior National cut time in her sixth-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.52, which was also a U.S. Swimming "Top 16" time and Navy team record. Betz also swam the 200 butterly where she finished seventh in 2:03.75, was 14th in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.66 and 13th in the 200 IM in 2:07.50 -- all Junior National cut times.

Joan Chidester, 17, of Edgewater also swam best times in all five of her events, setting four Navy team records and recording four U.S. Swimming "Top 16" times in the 100 freestyle (51.70), 400 IM (4:28.48), 500 freestyle (4:56.05) and 200 IM (2:06.66). She also trialed the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.01.

Maggie Phillips, 17, of Millersville, recorded two best times in the 100 backstroke (1:01.17) and the relay lead-off in the 100 freestyle (52.36). She also swam the 200 free in 1:56.92 and the 100 free in 53.73.

Fifteen-year-old Natalie Phillips swam a best time in the 200 backstroke (2:07.07) and Junior National cut times in the 200 butterfly (2:06.81) and 100 butterfly (57.96). She also recorded a 2:10.73 in the 200 IM.

In her first appearance at Junior Nationals, 14-year-old Megan Melgaard of Severna Park swam three best times in the 500 freestyle (5:07.00), 100 backstroke relay lead-off (1:00.79) and the 200 freestyle lead-off (1:54.79). She also recorded a 2:09.50 in the 200 backstroke.

The Navy Junior 400-free relay team of Betz, Chidester, Maggie and Natalie Phillips finished third with a time of 3:29.22, meeting the new Senior National cut with five seconds to spare.

The 800-free relay team of Betz, Melgaard and the Phillips finished fifth in a Senior National cut time of 7:36.19. The 400-medley relay team of Betz, Chidester, Melgaard and Maggie Phillips finished 15th in a time of 3:58.74, establishing a new Senior National cut for the club.

Navy finished fourth overall out of the 77 scoring women's teams.
