Orioles update
The Orioles go into Tiger Stadium with a lineup that even the Tigers would envy. They have scored 29 runs and hit 10 home runs in their first five games, led by Rafael Palmeiro and Mike Devereaux, who have three each and have combined for 13 RBI. All four Jeffrey Hammonds' hits have gone for extra bases. The Orioles are averaging four extra-base hits a game. They also figure to have a marked edge on the mound, where Mussina and McDonald have gone a combined 3-0, giving up only five earned runs in 19 1/3 innings.
Tigers update
After a 2-4 start on the road, the Tigers play the Orioles in their home opener. Before Cecil Fielder unloaded for two home runs in a victory over New York yesterday, the Tigers' power foursome of Fielder, Travis Fryman, Eric Davis and Mickey Tettleton had gone a collective 10-for-68 with two homers in the first five games. The pitching has struggled as expected, and things don't figure to get any easier against a potent Orioles lineup.
