Carroll County fifth-grader wins Md. geography bee

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Name the cold ocean current that mixes with the warmer Gulf Stream, to create fog along the coasts of New England and southeastern Canada.

Fifth-grader Matthew Coyle can -- and did yesterday at Towson State University to win the Maryland Geography Bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

His answer, "Labrador Current," made him one of the youngest students to win the bee in this state, say officials at Maryland Public Television. MPT will broadcast the bee at 8 p.m. today and 5 p.m. Monday.

Matthew, a Winfield Elementary School student and son of Richard and Melissa Coyle of Mount Airy, beat 99 other students from fourth through eighth grade from around the state.

He has won $100, an outing on the Pride of Baltimore II and an opportunity to compete in the national bee in Washington May 25.

Matthew was Carroll County's top scorer in the state bee lasyear, but missed getting into the finals over a question that he still maintains he got right.
