A 42-year-old Westminster woman, pulled from her burning car after it crashed into a pickup truck in Sandymount, died yesterday at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Pamela Darby suffered cardiac arrest at the accident, which occurred about 3:15 p.m. yesterday on Route 140 at Sandymount Road.

She was revived by a Reese medic unit crew and Westminster rescue workers, state police said, and was breathing despite massive head injuries when placed in the state police MedEvac helicopter.

She died at 6:03 p.m., a Shock Trauma spokeswoman said. An autopsy will be performed today.

Investigators said the woman was driving a Honda Prelude west on Route 140 when it ran into the rear of a Ford F-150 pickup truck stopped at the traffic light.

NB The car ran under the pickup, apparently scraping the gasoline

tank and causing both vehicles to catch fire.

The Prelude knocked the rear axle off the truck and spun around at least twice, police said.

Police said two passers-by pulled the woman from the car, and she suffered cardiac arrest. The rescuers were not identified.

The driver of the truck, Thomas C. Ahalt Sr., 39, of Hampstead, was taken to Carroll County General Hospital.

He was in satisfactory condition yesterday evening, said a hospital spokeswoman.

Police detoured traffic on Route 140 onto Suffolk Road to Old Westminster Pike.

Deputy Sheriff Charles Cullison and a passing utility worker used fire extinguishers on the flaming car before firefighters from Reese arrived at the accident.

Neither driver was wearing a safety belt, according to the investigating officer, Tfc. David Hoff.
