Sandymount basketball
* Grades 3-5 boys -- Andy Kuchera scored nine points and Ryan Cheney eight to lead Black to a 29-20 win over Green. Green's Adam Baker led all scorers with 14 points.
Red nipped Gold, 26-25, despite a 17-point performance by Gold's Kyle Zentz. Tim Love paced the Red attack with 14 points.
Matt Thompson's 12 points paced Maroon to a 20-12 victory over Orange. Adam Ridgway scored seven for Orange.
* Grades 6-8 boys -- Adam Reese scored a game-high 22 points for Blue. But Maroon was the winner, 46-43. Bo Ridgway's 18 points led Maroon.
Nick Jenkins scored 30 points to lead Green to a 58-43 win over Black. Mike Wissinger had 23 for Black.
Mike Haskell scored 25 points to lead Gold's 57-24 victory over Red. Red's Kyle Gagnon had eight.
* High school -- Black topped Green, 54-39, despite a 24-point performance from Ben Heslin. Sam Luther scored 18 for Black.
Jim Stull scored 22 points to lead White to a 55-25 victory over Gold. Tim Barnhardt scored 10 for Gold.
Blue's Dave Roush scored 43 points, but it wasn't enough to stop his team from falling to Light Blue, 83-67. Rob Krebs had 26 points for the winners.
Gymnastics
A number of Perna gymnasts had excellent performances in a recent Level IV meet at the Perna gym.
Melissa Hiner scored 8.80 on the vault, 8.00 on floor exercises and balance beam, and 32.70 all-around. Cigi Gass had 8.90 on floor and parallel bars, and 35.35 all-around.
Jessica Shelton had a 9.00 on vault and 30.25 all-around. Jennifer Griffith scored 8.20 on vault, 8.30 on bars and 30.75 all-around.
Andrea Keefer had 9.00 on beam and 34.40 all-around. Airlia Esworthy scored 8.70 on vault and 32.05 all-around.
Lauren Reese had 8.75 on vault and 33.05 all-around. Christine Leazer had 8.50 on vault and 30.20 all-around.
Nicole Puller scored 8.30 on vault and 29.85 all-around.
Holly Erikson scored 8.40 on vault, 8.20 on floor and 32.25 all-around.
Lauren Hastings scored 8.80 on vault and 30.55 all-around.
Megan Burda scored 8.90 on vault, 8.80 on beam and 34.20 all-around.
Perna's Jenn Groszkowski recently competed in the Level X girls state meet. She scored 9.05 on vault (third), 8.60 on parallel bars (sixth), 6.50 on balance beam, 8.45 on floor exercises (fifth) and 32.60 all-around (sixth).
A number of other Perna gymnasts competed in their last Level V sectional meet of the year.
Kira Armacost scored 6.65 on vault, 6.05 on bars, 7.45 on beam, 6.50 on floor and 26.65 all-around.
Brittany Traeger had 6.90 on vault, 7.00 on bars, 8.20 on beam, 7.45 on floor and an all-around of 29.55.
Megan Newman scored 8.50 on vault, 7.45 on bars and beam, 7.75 on floor and 31.15 all-around.
Katie Mechalski had 8.20 on vault, 8.15 on bars, 8.05 on beam, 7.60 on floor and 32.00 all-around.
Kadie Thomas had 7.20 on vault, 7.80 on bars, 8.50 on beam, 7.75 on floor and 31.25 all-around.
Erin Hiner scored 6.90 on vault, 6.35 on bars, 8.10 on beam, 7.75 on floor and an all-around of 29.10.
Holly Baust had 7.40 on vault, 6.75 on bars, 8.20 on beam, 7.65 on floor and 30.00 all-around.
Perna Gymnastics will play host to the Maryland State Girls Level V gymnastics meet, April 23-24 at Westminster High School.
Wrestling
A number of Carroll County competitors placed in the top three in the recent Western District wrestling championships. The finishes qualified them for this weekend's regional championships at Millersville University in Millersville, Pa.
Sixteen Carroll wrestlers took individual titles.
Manchester had six winners, Westminster four, the Warriors three, Francis Scott Key two, and one was an independent.

Rugby
The Mason-Dixon Rugby Club swept two matches from Kent Island last weekend.
The A side improved to 2-0-1 by holding off its Eastern Shore counterparts, 14-10; the B side prevailed, 17-8.
After falling behind 3-0 on an early penalty kick, the Mason-Dixon A's took command.
Mike Piavis scored a five-point trie, and Scott Myers booted the two-point conversion kick, putting Mason-Dixon ahead 7-3 at halftime.
The Carroll squad opened up more daylight in the second half when Tony Gilbert scored a trie from in close, on an assist from Tim Desmond.
Myers' second conversion kick put Mason-Dixon ahead, 14-3.
A Kent Island trie and conversion narrowed the gap to four points with about 15 minutes left in the game.
Mason-Dixon, though, kept the opposition pinned in its own territory the remainder of the match.
The B side also saw Mason-Dixon fall behind 3-0 early in the match.
But Scott Andersen put it ahead for good with a trie, and Neil Myers booted the two-point conversion.
A Neil Myers penalty kick made it 10-3 Mason-Dixon at halftime.
Neil Myers scored a second-half trie, and Ron Myers hit the conversion, for the final Mason-Dixon points, making the score 17-3.
Tennis
The Love Machine had won 24 consecutive league matches over three seasons. But Saturday night at the Carroll Racquet Club in Finksburg, that streak finally ended.
The Aces never trailed, and won, 36-29, over three-time league champ Love Machine.
The Aces' Linda White and Paula King opened with an 8-2 win in mixed doubles.
Then, with his Aces team already leading 23-17, Ron Chang applied the clincher.
He won, 8-4, in men's No. 2 singles to give the Aces an insurmountable 31-21 lead entering the final match.
In that one, Debbie Courter and Allen Anthony took an 8-5 mixed doubles victory for the Love Machine.
The loss dropped the Love Machine out of its accustomed first-place slot. The 10s-2nite squad took over the top position with a 27-24 victory over the Poachers.
Bonnie Richardson and Lisa Schrodel got the Poachers off to a quick lead with an opening 8-1 win in women's doubles.
But 10s's Mike Rowe matched that with an 8-1 win in No. 1 men's singles.
Rowe then teamed with Roger Coffee for a 8-0 decision in men's doubles to send 10s (7-0) ahead for good.
The Poachers made their final move with Don Fortney's 8-2 victory in men's No. 2 singles, narrowing the gap to 19-17.
But 10s held on in the final event. There, Dennis Albright and Liuda Galinaitis prevailed, 8-7, in mixed doubles.
The Love Machine and 10s meet next month with first place on the line.
The Lynesmen dealt the Coyotes the most one-sided defeat in the history of Carroll Cup competition, with a 40-9 victory.
Allen Wroe won an 8-1 decision in men's No. 1 singles for the Lynesmen, who swept all five events.
Don Betz and Mike Zimmerman contributed with an 8-3 men's doubles victory.
Jim Eanes and Duane Yingling each notched 8-1 men's singles wins to key the Topspinners' 29-26 victory over the Death Squad.
Eanes' No. 1 men's singles win put his team ahead for good after Maria Vailas and Shanna Peters opened with an 8-5 women's doubles verdict for the Death Squad.
The Smashers topped the Crushers, 35-24.
Carlton Thomas and Beth Yingling won, 8-2, in mixed doubles for the Smashers, who celebrated their first victory of the year.
The Smashers' Adrian Mihaescu and Thomas teamed to win, 8-5, in men's doubles, and Mihaescu won, 8-5, in men's No. 2 singles.
Dennis Ohme's 8-3 men's No. 1 singles victory gave the Crushers a short-lived 12-11 lead early in the match.
North Carroll basketball
The five regular-season first-place finishers continued their good fortune in the Council's annual postseason championship fray.
* Grades 4-6 girls -- Henry Ruhlman No. 4 topped Henry Ruhlman No. 2, 20-9. Katie Walter and Candice Jeffrey paced the winners' attack with nine and seven points, respectively. Julie Wike and Lori Lang each scored four for Ruhlman No. 2.
* Grades 3-4 boys -- Hughes Trash Removal topped Miller-Liberto, 8-6, in overtime. Joey Centineo scored the tie-breaking point on a foul shot in the overtime period. Doug Johnson's six points paced Hughes; Matt Myers had three for Miller-Liberto.
* Grades 5-6 boys -- Hunt Valley Imported Auto Sales nipped The Batter's Box, 28-26. Mark Campbell had 12 points for Hunt Valley, which was undefeated this year. Kevin Sirman had six for Batter's Box, and Kevin Zander added six.
* Grades 7-8 Co-eds -- Harlan Catering topped Thomas, Bennett and Hunter, 55-51. Matt Harlan scored 22 points for the victors' and Steven Bair had 21. Thomas' Jeremy Hale paced all scorers with 24 points.
* Men's league -- Mike Lynch's free throw with four seconds remaining lifted the Bullets to a 61-60 win over the Suns. Lynch led the Bullets with 24 points. Troy Warehime had 36 points for the Suns.
