A Carroll Circuit Court jury took about an hour Friday to convict a New Windsor man on two counts of automobile manslaughter.

James Gregory Martin, 21, of the 2900 block of Sams Creek Road, could receive a prison term of 20 years and a $10,000 fine when he is sentenced by Judge Francis M. Arnold on June 7.

Prosecutors said that Martin, driving a pickup, was playing a game of "chicken" with Carroll Lynn "Hot Shot" Schisler Jr. , also in a truck, on Route 407 on Dec. 12, 1992. The two vehicles collided head-on, killing two passengers in Martin's truck

instantly.

According to court records and police reports, Martin drove into the path of Mr. Schisler's truck, which was towing a livestock trailer. Mr. Schisler was unable to get out of the way before the crash, court records say.

The crash claimed the lives of Gary Schisler, 25, -- Carroll's brother -- and Andy Stonesifer, 18, both of New Windsor.

Prosecution witnesses testified during the three-day trial that Martin said he would "get even" with Carroll Schisler for a defamatory statement he made about Martin.

State troopers and accident reconstruction experts told the jury of eight men and four women that the trucks collided in Mr. Schisler's lane, not in Martin's, as the defense had contended.

EMartin -- who did not testify at the trial -- was severely injured in the wreck, and his attorney told the jury that Martin has no memory of it.

In addition to the automobile manslaughter counts, the jury convicted Martin of four traffic violations. He will remain free on $30,000 bail pending sentencing.
