Rabbi offers Judaism refresher course

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Rabbi Seymour Essrog wants to "reawaken the Jewish soul in people away from tradition," and he hopes more Carroll County residents will embrace the opportunity.

"There are 300 Jewish households in Carroll County," said the rabbi and spiritual leader of Beth Shalom congregation in Taylorsville.

"We haven't reached them all yet, but we will keep trying."

Through a home-study course, sponsored by the Jewish Community Center in Baltimore, the rabbi is offering Jews an "opportunity to start from scratch" in their journey of faith.

"I am throwing the seeds out to people who are searching and learning," he said.

Rabbi Essrog is leading "Derekh Torah: the Way of Torah" for adults who want to explore Judaism and define its place in their lives.

"They can refresh their memories and learn about their heritage," said the rabbi. "The course will run the whole gamut in the life cycle of Jews from birth to death."

About 15 people have enrolled in the class, which will meet in homes for two hours weekly for five months. The group will set a date to start soon.

The rabbi said he encourages his students to discuss their backgrounds and concerns. The course should also be helpful to married couples of mixed faiths, he said.

The Derekh Torah will survey the Bible and review the rituals and culture surrounding the Jewish experience, including Sabbath dinners for the participants.

"We want to celebrate the significant moments and take advantage of the organized Jewish community," said the rabbi. "We welcome all back to the epicenter."

The cost of the program for Jewish Community Center members $100 for singles and $175 for couples.

For nonmembers, it's $150 for singles and $275 for couples. Scholarships are available.
