The Maryland Motor Vehicle Theft Task Force raided an alleged "chop shop" in South Baltimore Friday, seizing stolen cars and trucks, and parts valued at more than $165,000, a state police spokesman said.

An inventory of cars and equipment seized on a warrant for Kingsway Motors, in the 1400 block of Cherry Hill Road, continued yesterday, said spokesman Michael J. McKelvin.

A Baltimore man suspected of being a ringleader was being held yesterday in lieu of $35,000 bail.

Dominic Olumuyiwa Akinwale, 42, of Massachusetts Avenue in Southwest Baltimore, was arrested Friday afternoon by state police at the Chesapeake House rest area on Interstate 95 in Cecil County, after he called the business to say his vehicle had broken down. He was charged with seven counts of theft.

"It was a legitimate business. The problem was that they allowed illegal activity in the building," Mr. McKelvin said.

He said it was unclear yesterday who the owners of the business were and what connection Mr. Akinwale had with the garage. He said city police in the Southeastern District will continue the investigation, and that more arrests are expected.

The inventory included two front-end loaders, a roll-back tow truck, a Nissan sports car, a Porsche, a Ford pickup truck and parts from other stolen cars, the spokesman said.

Some of the vehicles' identification numbers had been changed or removed to make the vehicles more difficult to trace, Mr. McKelvin said. Equipment used to alter the vehicle identification number plates also was confiscated.
