DETROIT -- The Washington Capitals scored the first two times they shot, but gave up two third-period goals as the Detroit Red Wings gained a 2-2 tie before a standing-room crowd of 19,875 at Joe Louis Arena last night.
The game ended with a brawl with only 4.2 second remaining to play in overtime.
Sylvain Cote and Kelly Miller scored in the first period, and Don Beaupre stopped the Red Wings for 50 minutes.
The Red Wings finally got to Beaupre midway through the third period. Ray Sheppard scored his 49th goal on a power play at 10:27 to cut the Capitals lead to 2-1. The shot beat Beaupre low on the glove side.
Then, at 18:28, Keith Primeau scored his 24th goal to tie the score at 2.
The Capitals scored on their first two shots to take a 2-0 lead. Cote ripped a 70-foot slap shot past rookie goalie Chris Osgood at 1:39 of the first period. Cote's 12th goal came on a shot taken 10 feet outside the blue line.
Miller beat Osgood from close in on the glove side after being set up on a Calle Johansson pass. It was Miller's ninth goal.
Bob Essensa replaced Osgood in the Detroit net at 4:55 of the first period.
Beaupre and the Washington defense took care of the Red Wings in the first period. Detroit came close to scoring twice. Primeau missed the net when he broke in on Beaupre with 10 minutes to play in the first period.
Beaupre made an extraordinary recovery with 58 seconds remaining in the first period. He skated to the corner to clear a loose puck. Detroit's Dino Ciccarelli took the puck from Beaupre. But the Caps goaltender got back to the net and smothered the puck before Ciccarelli could get off a shot.
The game got rougher in the second period with several fighting penalties. Michal Pivonka had to be helped from the ice after a hard check by Detroit's Primeau early in the period.
The Capitals had three power play opportunities, but did not get a good shot on Essensa.
With Detroit playing a man short, Beaupre stopped Ciccarelli twice at point-blank range, first on the shot and then on the rebound.
With the Red Wings again short-handed, Steve Yzerman got loose on a breakaway. But Beaupre stopped the shot when Yzerman tried a low shot on the stick side.
