Carroll County Basketball * Boys championships -- The Westminster Owls swept both ends the Carroll County Basketball League's postseason championship tournament last weekend.

The A Division squad, which won the regular-season title, clinched the championship with a 66-25 win over Taneytown. The B team, which saw St. John's take the regular-season championship, got revenge by topping St. John's, 59-48, in the tourney championship game.

The Owls A squad opened the tourney with a 32-point explosion in the first quarter of its game against Woodbine and rolled on to win, 79-42.

Taiwan Veney sparked the first-quarter Westminster spurt with 14 points and went on to lead the Owls with 19. Josh Hollman supported with 13. Aaron Dorsey's 16 paced Woodbine.

Winfield downed Taneytown, 62-56, despite a 29-point performance by Taneytown's Kevin DeCarlo. Kevin Damiano and Nathan Russell paced Winfield with 15 points apiece.

John's got past St. Joseph's, 42-39. Bryan Bollinger paced the winners with 18 points, and Tim Chairs had 17 for St. Joseph's.

St. John's pulled away in the second half to beat North Carroll, 52-43. John Ritcey paced St. John's with 14 points. Mike Landow and Sean Davis added 12 and 11, respectively, for St. John's. Jason Wingert had 12 for North Carroll.

Westminster shot to a 30-8 halftime lead and cruised to a 54-35 win over Winfield. Josh Hollman paced the winning Owls with 17 points, and Jermaine Thornton had 15. John Luster had six for Winfield; Kevin Damiano and Nathan Russell each added five.

Taneytown jumped to a 31-7 halftime lead and went on to beat Woodbine, 50-30. Kevin DeCarlo had 12 points for Taneytown and Vince Stonesifer added 10. Carl Craig and Tom Crown each scored eight for Woodbine.

Kevin DeCarlo paced all scorers with 24 points, and J.J. Montgomery supported with 14 to pace Taneytown's 70-54 victory over Gamber-Smallwood. Bryan Bollinger had 14 for Gamber; Aaron Krug and Clint Brownley each added 11.

Winfield pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat North Carroll, 47-31. Greg Will and Nathan Russell paced the winners with 13 and 12 points, respectively. North Carroll's Jason Wingert had eight.

Taneytown came from behind in the fourth quarter to edge Winfield, 57-55. Taneytown's Kevin DeCarlo led all scorers with 17 points. Nathan Russell scored 15 for Winfield.

Westminster topped St. John's, 51-25, as Taiwan Veney led the way with 18 points, and Jermaine Thornton supported with 15. Jeff Landow scored 10 for St. John's.

Taneytown qualified for the finals by beating St. John's, 53-40. The winners, trailing 27-23 at halftime, rallied to outscore St. John's, 30-14 after intermission.

Taneytown's Kevin DeCarlo scored a game-high 22 points, and Vince Stonesifer added 14. Mike Landow had 11 for St. John's; Pat Dain and Sean Davis each added eight.

Westminster's 66-25 championship game win, Desmond Esteves paced all scorers with 20 points, Jermaine Thornton chipped in with 17. Taneytown's Vince Stonesifer scored 10.

In a B Division preliminary game, St. John's beat Taneytown, 54-30. Jason Jarrett paced the winners' balanced attack with 10 points, John DeCesare added nine, and Robert Fisher, eight. Kody Jenkins had a game-high 12 points for Taneytown; Jason Little added eight.

St. Joseph's downed Woodbine, 47-27, as Jonathan Tissue led its attack with 12 points, and Michael Bowers added 11, all in the first half. Cody Haslup and Tavon Saunders paced Woodbine with 12 points apiece.

Derek Boswell scored 24 points to lead Winfield to a 60-47 victory over North Carroll. Dan Stansbury chipped in with 10 for the winners. Billy Hammond scored 12 for North Carroll; Matthew Capece and Charles Devilbiss each added 10.

Westminster beat Gamber-Smallwood, 48-12. Jon David Byers scored 13 points for the winners, and Nick Hohenwarter had 11. John Brownley scored four points for Gamber.

Woodbine scored a 48-42 overtime win over Taneytown. Woodbine's Tavon Saunders led all scorers with 20 points. Cody Haslup added 15, four of these coming in the overtime period when Woodbine outscored Taneytown, 8-2. Taneytown's Jason Little paced all scorers with 21 points, and Kody Jenkins supported with 16.

Derek Boswell scored 17 points to lead Winfield to a 39-22 win over Woodbine. Saunders scored 12 for Woodbine.

Westminster downed Winfield, 82-44, despite a 28-point performance from Derek Boswell. Jon David Byers paced the winners' attack with 18 points. Nick Hohenwarter and Quentin Woodyard each chipped in with 16.

St. Joseph's broke open a close game with a 12-3 third-quarter spurt and went on to beat Gamber-Smallwood, 37-28. Charles Loskarn paced St. Joseph's with 14 points, and Michael Bowers added 10. Doug Steigerwald scored 14 for Gamber.

Joseph's trailed Winfield, 18-17 at halftime. But it outscored the Warriors, 16-9 in a decisive third quarter, and went on to win, 39-35. Michael Bowers and Charles Loskarn paced the winners with 12 points apiece. Derek Boswell and Dan Stansbury each had eight for Winfield, and Anthony Jones, six.

Westminster broke open a close game in the fourth quarter and pulled away from St. John's, 45-26. Quentin Woodyard and Raheem Warfield paced the winners with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Dwayne Magruder had seven points for St. John's, which trailed only 27-21 after three quarters before Westminster erupted, 18-5 in the fourth. Jason Jarrett and Robert Fisher each added six for St. John's.

St John's withstood a furious St. Joseph's rally and held on for a 45-43 victory. The winners, keyed by Jason Jarrett's 13 points and Marty Kweder's 11, held a 37-22 lead after three quarters.

But Sean Burke, who led all scorers with 14 points, and Michael Bowers who had 11, spurred a St. Joseph's rally that outscored St. John's, 21-8 in the final quarter before falling a basket short.

St. John's, though, could not withstand Westminster's charge in the championship game.

The Owls pulled to a 35-23 halftime lead and maintained that margin in the second half.

Westminster's Nick Hohenwarter scored 23 points to lead all scorers. Raheem Warfield chipped in with 18 for the winners.

Robert Fisher's 14 points led St. John's, Marty Kwedar had eight, and Jason Jarrett, seven.

* Girls championships -- In Senior Division action, the Westminster Warriors, who won the Christmas Tournament, swept four games to win the divisional championship.

the finals, they shot to a 26-11 lead after three quarters, and then withstood a furious St. Joseph's fourth-quarter surge to win, 32-27.

Courtney Bierne paced the winners with 10 points and Nicky Davidson added six. Kate Hannon and Mandy South scored nine and eight points, respectively, for St. Joseph's.

The Warriors qualified for the finals by edging

Westminster III, 29-27. As in the finals, the Warriors had to withstand a fourth-quarter rally.

They led, 27-20, entering the final quarter, and managed to hang on by a basket, even though outscored, 7-2. The loss was the first of the year for Westminster III.

Bierne had eight points, and Cathy Frame, six, for the Warriors. Mary Dickensheets scored 10 points for Westminster III and Kayleen Smith, nine.

Westminster I, which won the Christmas Tournament and went undefeated in the regular season, also won the Junior Division championship.

The squad completed a 15-0 season by nudging Hampstead Union National Bank, 15-13, in the title game. Kaitie Schuyler paced the winners with eight points, and Kirsten Love had four.

Love, who played an excellent defensive game, scored the clinching basket to give her squad a six-point lead with three minutes remaining in the game.

A basket by Union National high-scorer Julie Wike (six points) brought her team within two points, but it couldn't score the tying basket.

Jeanetta McGettigan was strong on the boards for the victors, and point guard Schuyler did an outstanding job of setting up Westminster's offense throughout the tournament.

Sandymount basketball * Junior Division -- Jason Stevens scored nine points, as his Black team topped Red, 35-14. Scott Erpelding and Tim Love each scored six for Red.

Maroon downed Gold, 48-17. Matthew Thompson scored 12 for Maroon; Eric Dunn had 10 for Gold.

Adam Ridgway scored 13 points to lead Orange to a 31-19 victory over Green. Green's Adam Baker scored a game-high 16.

* Senior Division -- Mike Haskell scored 21 points to lead Gold to a 40-28 win over Maroon. Beau Ridgway had eight for Maroon.

Nick Jenkins scored 23 points, as his Green squad topped Navy, 78-45. Adam Reese's 24 points paced Navy.

Kyle Gagnon had 28 points, as his Red squad got past Black,

45-42. Mike Wissinger had 17 points for Black.

Gymnastics

The Perna Gymnastics Club's boys team recently competed in the state meet at Fairland Gymnastics in Prince George's County.

Perna's Class VI team placed third at the meet. John Roscoe, competing in Class VI, scored 5.80 on rings (fourth), 5.30 on vaulting (sixth), 5.70 on parallel bars (sixth) and 32.40 all-around (sixth).

Jared Craig scored 5.60 on floor exercises (first), 5.80 on rings (fourth), 5.30 on vault (sixth) and 30.30 all-around (sixth). Joshua Sallow scored 4.80 on pommel horse and rings and 27.40 all-around.

Adam Tenney scored 5.40 on rings, 5.00 on parallel bars and 29.00 all-around. Competing in Class V, John Royer scored 6.30 on floor (fourth), 5.10 on vault (fifth) and 30.50 all-around.

Sean Ruth had 5.80 on floor, 5.70 on rings and 31.90 all-around. Competing in Class IV, Nick Willet scored 6.90 on floor, 6.80 on vault (first), 5.80 on parallel bars, 5.70 on high bar and 35.30 all-around.

Scott Clingan scored 6.10 on high bar and 30.15 all-around. Ed Calwell had 6.40 on floor, 4.10 on horse, 5.10 on rings, 6.10 on vault, 5.50 on parallel bars, 5.90 on high bar, for a second place all-around of 33.15

Chris Forman, competing in Class III, scored 7.00 on floor, 7.65 on vault (first), 6.10 on high bar and 35.85 all-around. Forman and Royer qualified to compete in the regionals.
