The best things on TV tonight are on cable, which is becoming an increasingly common observation, especially on Wednesday nights. Network TV highlights include a groovy episode of "Beverly Hills, 90210," in which the cast members show up in flower-power regalia as part of a '60s "flashback" episode. Don't be bummed, though: a diary, not LSD, triggers the flashback.

* " Beverly Hills, 90210" (8-9 p.m., WBFF, Channel 45) -- Jason Priestley, who plays Brandon, directs this episode, which has Brenda (Shannen Doherty) reading from an old diary and imagining her family and friends as the people in the diary. This plot line hasn't been seen since, oh, the most recent episode of "Mad About You," but the gear and fab Summer of Love fashions and makeup are somewhere between psychedelic and psupersilly, making this "Beverly Hills, 90210" more fun to watch than usual -- based on the promos, at least. Fox.

* "Tom" (8:30-9 p.m., WBAL, Channel 11) -- On tonight's episode, a teacher hits Tom (Tom Arnold) with the surprise news that one of his kids should be skipped a grade because of his high intelligence. However, because of this series' low intelligence, my recommendation is that viewers should skip "Tom" altogether. CBS.

* "Wild Wheels" (9-10 p.m., WETA, Channel 26) -- This fanciful documentary about even more fanciful cars is tonight's light-hearted wreckommendation. If you like your vehicles covered with grass, or miniature skylines, or buttons or flickering lights, you auto see this. PBS.

Cable

* "Map of the Human Heart" (8-9:50 p.m., MAX) -- Speaking of cinematography, there are gorgeous images throughout this 1993 romantic drama, in which Jason Scott Lee stars as an Eskimo in love.

* "Fatal Vision" (9-11 p.m., Lifetime) -- First of two parts. This miniseries, now 10 years old, was one of the earliest triumphs of the true-crime genre. Even after hundreds of pale imitators, it shines, and even surprises. Gary Cole, Karl Malden star.
