Boy struck by police car in stable condition

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A 6-year-old West Baltimore boy was listed in stable condition early today after being struck by a police car in the 600 block of N. Gilmor St. yesterday evening.

Officer John Emrick, of the Police Department's Traffic Investigation Section, said Matthew Williams of the 500 block of N. Gilmor St. was a block from his home and running across the street in front of a parked taxicab shortly after 6 p.m. when he was hit by a Western District patrol car driven by Officer Troy Jackson, 37.

At the time, the officer was driving toward the Walbrook Junction area to provide routine backup for another officer and apparently was not exceeding the speed limit, Officer Emrick said.

Officer Jackson summoned an ambulance. The child was admitted to the Johns Hopkins Children's Center for treatment of a head scrape and a possible broken leg, police said. The cause of the accident was listed as pedestrian error, and no charge was lodged against the officer, a member of the force since August.
