Disney: O's talks on

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A day after word leaked out, the Walt Disney Co. yesterday acknowledged it is negotiating with the Orioles to build a spring-training complex at Disney World.

In a statement issued from its Florida headquarters, Disney said it is "having discussions" with many professional and amateur sports organizations about a planned sports complex at its theme park in Orlando, Fla.

"Among the many options we are considering is a . . . lease agreement for spring training with the Orioles," the statement said. "Any negotiations held to date are preliminary and speculative."

Disney and the Orioles are discussing plans for a complex thatwould include a 10,000-seat stadium and four practice fields. The project could be ready by 1997.

Disney dismissed reports yesterday that it is considering a mini-theme park that would be built adjacent to the Orioles' Camden Yards stadium in Baltimore. The Washington Post reported yesterday that Disney is exploring the prospects for an amusement park near the ballpark.

The Orioles, however, are intrigued with possibilities for development of about 45 acres south of Camden Yards. Owner Peter G. Angelos has spoken to state officials about several redevelopment ideas for the waterfront property.
