1994 COUNTY BASEBALL PREVIEW

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Arlington Baptist Eagles

1993 record: 6-3. Coach: Dave Dawson.

Top players: Jarrett Watson, Jr., CF/P; David Barlock, Jr., P/C; Andy Booker, So., P/C/SS; Matt Simpson, Sr., OF.

Outlook: The Eagles lost several key players, including their most valuable player. There will be some good depth in the pitching department, led by Barlock, last year's No. 2 pitcher. Speed should be another plus, but hitting is the big question mark.

Calvert Hall Cardinals

1993 record: 21-4. Coach: Joe Binder.

Top players: Jason Reinhart, Sr., P/OF; Adam Roberts, Sr., OF; Liam Healy, Sr., 3B/OF; Jason Dean, Jr., 1B; Jason Conroy, Sr., C.

Outlook: The Cardinals, defending MIAA A Conference champions and winners of the title five of the past six years, have lots of talent again. Reinhart, 8-1 last year, will lead a strong pitching staff bolstered by junior Andy Bair and senior Craig Shiel. Reinhart, with a 2.14 ERA last year and a second-team All-Metro pick, was overshadowed by Brian Matz. The Cardinals' lineup looks strong again, as does the defense. Binder's main concern are some spots of inexperience in the infield, but he hopes it will come together as the season goes on.

Catonsville Comets

1993 record: 7-9. Coach: John Leslie.

Top players: Cad Cameron, Sr., P; Jeremy Kolarek, Sr., P/C; Don Senkis, Sr., SS/ OF; Chris Jackson, Sr., 3B; Quentin Skipwith, Sr., OF.

Outlook: Cameron and Kolarek will lead a good pitching staff for the Comets. A senior-dominated infield also should help Catonsville. Hitting could be another plus, but depth worries Leslie. The Comets did not lose a lot from last year, but the new players need to step up.

Chesapeake Bayhawks

1993 record: 10-6. Coach: Jack Kirtland.

Top players: Mike Marange, Sr., C; Doug Carraway, Jr., 3B; Lamar King, Sr., OF; Jermaine Johnson, Sr., OF.

Outlook: Kirtland has a good nucleus with plenty of experience. Marange and King should be big threats for an offense that should score. Pitching also looks to be strong, especially if some juniors come through. The defense is questionable in spots, but the Bayhawks could have fun if the juniors come through.

Dulaney Lions

1993 record: 15-5. Coach: Ron Audlin.

Top players: Greg Mumford, Sr., OF; Erin Arizzi, Sr., 1B/P; Andrew Michael, Sr., SS; Steve Wieczynski, Sr., P/1B; Colin O'Malley, Sr., P/1B.

Outlook: The bottom line for this team is pitching and hitting. If both come together, this could be a big year for the Lions. They have plenty of arms (like left-handers Arizzi, Wieczynski and O'Malley), but they just need experience. Defense is another plus, especially the infield, and the team has depth all over the place. Dulaney made the state semifinals last year, and it could be in that area again if everything falls into place.

Dundalk Owls

1993 record: 13-7. Coach: George Scheulen.

Top players: Mike Dziemburski, Sr., C; Gene Woods, Sr., 1B; Travis Thornton, Sr., OF; Eric Cuppett, Sr., OF; Luke Bell, Sr., 2B; E'Mar Fleming, Sr., P.

Outlook: This team will hit and this team will field. Throw in good speed and depth to the mixture, and it's easy to see why the Owls should do well again. Thornton (.521 last year), Cuppett and Dziemburski lead a potent lineup. Dziemburski also is one of the best catchers around and will help the pitching staff, which needs to replace the two key pitchers it lost. The Owls, who lost to eventual Class 3A state champion Lansdowne by a 1-0 count in the region finals, should be near the top of the County's 3A-4A Division again and do well in the state playoffs.

Eastern Technical Mavericks

1993 record: 11-7. Coach: Joe Gast.

Top players: Tom Bialozynski, Sr., C; Bobby Custer, Jr., SS; Glenn Umbarger, Sr., 2B/P; Ira McCullough, Sr., CF; Chuck Buckland, Sr., 3B.

Outlook: The Mavericks have a good nucleus returning, plus some talented players coming from junior varsity. McCullough and Bialozynski will pace a good lineup, and defense looks strong up the middle. Gast said he's unsure of how the pitching will turn out; that and how the new players do could be the key to the season.

Franklin Indians

1993 record: 5-13. Coach: Chick Vrany.

Top players: Tim Zittle, Sr., 1B; Tim Angell, Jr., RF; Jordan Wolff, Jr., C; Nick Hienz, Jr., CF; Tom Hercek, Sr., P.

Outlook: The Indians should do better this season. They should benefit from several underclassmen coming up as well as better speed and hitting -- namely Angell, Zittle and Hienz. The team lacks experience in spots and does not have a lot of depth in pitching. Sophomore Mike Trott should be a big plus for the pitching staff.

Hereford Bulls

1993 record: 14-4. Coach: Guy Fisher.

Top players: Clint Eaton, Jr., OF; Robert Ignatowski, Sr., P; Andrew Minton, Sr., OF; Matt Saunders, Jr., SS; Geoff DeGarmo, Jr., C.

Outlook: The Bulls, who made it to the region finals last year, lost several good players, but many good ones return. Pitching depth is a plus, led by Ignatowski. Eaton and Minton will lead a strong outfield. Fisher said the hitting could be questionable, and the inexperience concerns him a bit.

Kenwood Bluebirds

1993 record: 4-14. Coach: Carroll Hess.

Top players: Dave Osborne, Sr., P/1B; Dan Mervis, Jr., SS; Kris Smith, Jr., C; Jamie Miller, Sr., OF; Aaron Crawford, Jr., 3B.

Outlook: Hess' squad is extremely young and should do its best in a year or two. Meanwhile, this year, the Bluebirds should do better, especially if the pitching comes together. Osborne, a four-year varsity player, is the team's top pitcher and hitter. The defense also looks better.

Lansdowne Vikings

1993 record: 18-3. Coach: Ron Bareford.

Top players: Rob Parsons, Sr., C; Bob Wheelton, Sr., P/OF/IF; Andy Stocksdale, Sr., SS; Vince Queen, Sr., OF: Howard Popp, Sr. 3B/P.

Outlook: The Class 3A state champions have another strong squad. While they lost their top three pitchers from last year, Bareford has some good arms to choose from. Defense, led by Parsons behind the plate, should be a plus again, as will hitting -- although there won't be as much power as last year. Depth on the mound is the coach's biggest concern.

Loch Raven Raiders

1993 record: 7-10. Coach: Bud Keene.

Top players: Scott Hudson, Sr., C; Glenn Cline, Sr., 2B; Todd Poling, Sr., 1B; Jason Longwell, Sr., 3B; Chris Allen, Jr., P.

Outlook: Seven returning starters should help the Raiders. Allen will lead an improved pitching corps, and a defense that struggled at times last year should do better. The Raiders boast a lineup that has five .300 hitters, topped by Cline at .318. Pitching is Keene's biggest worry. Bill Burton and Joe Russell will come after Allen, but Keene is not sure who comes after that.

Loyola Dons

1993 record: 8-10. Coach: Dave McCann.

Top players: Damien Austin, Jr., SS/P; Mike Dowgiewicz, P/1B, Sr.; Chris Holler, Sr., C; Chad Peddicord, Jr., 3B/C; Tom Goetzinger, Sr., SS/2B.

Outlook: Graduation was not kind to the Dons, taking 11 players. This team lacks varsity experience but the talent is there. Several players who did well on the JV are coming up, and McCann hopes for big things from them. The Dons should have a good 1-2 pitching punch in Dowgiewicz and Austin, and the offense and fielding look strong. The Dons, however, need the new players to do well and the pitchers to stay healthy.

Lutheran Saints

1993 record: 8-6. Coach: Tom Kolb.

Top players: Joel Davis, Sr., P; Curtis Miller, Sr., SS; Matt Duggins, Sr., OF; Shaine Downes, Jr., IF; Matt Amendt, Jr., C.

Outlook: Like last year, the B Conference runner-up Saints should boast good pitching and defense. Davis and Miller look to lead a pitching staff that will need to have a good season. That's because the offense has questions -- especially because it lacks power. Kolb is unsure of depth, too, but the team should be in the hunt again.

McDonogh Eagles

1993 record: 18-6 . Coach: Al Poklemba.

Top players: Ian Hendricks, Sr., 2B; Michael Ginsberg, Jr., P/SS; Guy Robertson, Jr., 3B/SS, Richie Levin, Jr. OF/P; Dennis Badham, Jr., OF.

Outlook: The Eagles bring back several from their A Conference finalists of last year. McDonogh hit .339 as a team last year, and the Eagles -- led by Hendricks, Badham and Ginsberg -- should do more of the same this season. In addition, the fielding looks good, especially up the middle. The biggest question for the Eagles is catching. Jeremy Seiple, a two-year starter behind the plate, moved to California and Poklemba is searching to fill the hole.

Milford Mill Millers

1993 record: 0-16. Coach: Jim Webb.

Top players: Brian Shuford, Sr., CF/P; Carlos Pearson, So., SS/P; Taj Andrews, Sr., C.

Outlook: Webb hopes for a better year, and that could happen if he gets some pitching help. The Millers boast good speed, especially in the outfield, but lack experience in many spots. They also don't have much depth on the mound, but have some possible pitchers.

Mount Carmel Cougars

1993 record: 11-7. Coach: Mike Naunton.

Top players: Chuck Friedel, Jr., C/P; Jason McKinney, Sr., SS/P; Dan Gittings, So. P/OF; Marc Guanti, Sr., OF; Matt Hasenei, Jr., 2B; Bill Collins, Fr., P/3B.

Outlook: The Cougars have a strong starting nine. Pitching and defense will be two of this team's calling cards. Gittings and Collins lead a deep pitching staff, and the defense looks good, especially up the middle. Also, speed is everywhere for the Cougars. They'll hit and run a lot, as power is scarce. A lack of depth will hurt, but they should be in the running for the top spot.

Overlea Falcons

1993 record: 14-5. Coach: Dave O'Neill.

Top players: John Kopajtic, Sr., P/3B; Craig Schoepflin, Sr., SS; K.C. Cowan, Sr., OF; Brandon Van Hoose, Jr., C; Joel Brown, Sr., P.

Outlook: The Falcons lost their two top pitchers from last year's playoff team, so Kopajtic will carry a lot of the pitching load. This team will be much like last year's, relying heavily on good pitching and defense. The Falcons boast plenty of experience and have lots of good JV players coming up, but have some question marks as the season begins.

Owings Mills Golden Eagles

1993 record: 11-6. Coach: Randy Pentz.

Top players: Pat Eagan, Sr., P; Dave Mize, Jr., C; Adam Silverman, Jr., 2B/P; Josh Zukerberg, Jr., SS/P; Brandon Noelte, Sr., OF.

Outlook: The county's surprise team last year, Owings Mills lost a lot to graduation but still has plenty of punch. The Golden Eagles, who hit .315 last year, should hit well again. The team looks solid on defense, too. The big question is pitching. Eagan will be the No. 1 hurler, but Owings Mills needs other new pitchers -- and position players -- to step up. Pentz also likes

several players coming up from JV.

Park Bruins

1993 record: 8-8 (junior varsity). Coach: Allan Garfinkel.

Top players: Lonnie Greenberg, Sr., SS; Jal Mehta, Jr., P; Chris Jaskolski, So., P; John Grissom, Jr., LF; Geoff Reed, Jr., CF.

Outlook: Park makes its varsity debut this spring. The Bruins are young but talented. They'll swing the bat well and get some good pitching. The defense looks good, but the biggest question here is, how far will the inexperience drag the team down? The Bruins should get some wins this season.

Parkville Knights

1993 record: 7-10. Coach: George Cooper.

Top players: Jason Sheets, Sr., OF; Dave Pullifrone, Sr., IF; Nick Kiaunis, Sr., OF; Ryan Darmstendt, Jr., OF.

Outlook: Cooper, who was 42-12 in three years at Hereford, will try to work similar magic at Parkville. He finds a nice nucleus of players. The outfield, with Sheets, Kiaunis and Darmstendt, looks good, as does the hitting and depth. Pitching concerns the coach because they're unproven, but they could blossom this season.

Patapsco Patriots

1993 record: 14-2. Coach: Dave Ingle.

Top players: Sal Greensfelder, Jr., P/C; Eric Shinsky, Sr., 3B; Rick Rogers, Sr., C/1B; Tim Jackson, Jr., OF; Charles Greensfelder, Jr., OF.

Outlook: The Patriots, the county's 1A-2A champion last year, move up to 3A-4A this year with a team similar to the 1993 group. The Patriots should be in the hunt again with one of the county's top teams. They swing the bat well, field nicely and have plenty of speed. Graduation claimed the team's top two pitchers, and Sal Greensfelder will be No. 1 on the mound this season. After that, Ingle is not sure what will happen. That seems to be the lone question for Ingle.

Perry Hall Gators

1993 record: 16-2. Coach: Larry Butts.

Top players: Mandell Marsh, Sr., OF; Jesse Moore, Sr., P; Jason Essel, Jr., P/ 1B; Chris Ude, Jr., IF; Ryan Burks, Sr., IF.

Outlook: The Gators, the county's 3A-4A champion last year and a region finalist, lost four starters but still field a talented squad. Marsh, Essel, Ude and Burks lead a potent lineup. Defense looks just as good, especially with an outfield that has lots of speed. Butts is concerned about the lack of experience in spots and the pitching. Several players are coming up from JV, and they'll need to contribute.

Pikesville Panthers

1993 record: 7-10. Coach: Mike Bruner.

Top players: Josh Katz, Sr., OF; Nate Holzman, Jr., SS; Dan Kassel, Sr., P/3B; Chad Hipsley, So., C; Ryan Diener, Sr., 2B.

Outlook: Seven position players return for the Panthers. The lineup looks strong again, led by Holzman, the county's top hitter at .537, Katz (.500), Kassel ( .421) and Hipsley (.370). The defense should be strong up the middle, but the Panthers need some pitching. Kassel is the only experienced pitcher, and if Pikesville is to make a strong run at the playoffs, it will need some more mound help.

Randallstown Rams

1993 record: 9-8. Coach: Dave Wright.

Top players: Brian Ward, Jr., P/OF; Shilo Merwitz, Jr., P/1B; Brandon Thomas, Jr., OF; Ramia Ray, So., OF; Todd Pinson, So. 3B; Todd Pobletts, Jr., SS.

Outlook: Wright likes how the hitting and defense look. Ward and Pinson can go deep for the Rams, and the fielding is strong -- especially in the infield. Pitching worries Wright, as only two pitchers return. The team is young, but many have played together for two years.

St. Paul's Crusaders

1993 record: 6-8. Coach: Bruce Latta.

Top players: Steve Trutt, Sr., SS; Chris Beach, Sr., 1B; Matt Emmons, Jr., LF; Jason Horic, Sr., RF; Greg Yin, Jr., P.

Outlook: Despite having a very young team, Latta is optimistic. Defense and pitching should carry St. Paul's this season. The hitting could be questionable, and the youth might hurt, but there is plenty of talent.

Sparrows Point Pointers

1993 record: 6-12. Coach: Sam Scott.

Top players: Steve Iman, Sr., 3B; Greg Smith, Jr., SS/2B; Wayne Brinkley, Jr., IF; Justin Kirkpatrick, Jr., C; Chris Cole, Jr., SS/P.

Outlook: The Pointers lost their top two pitchers from last year, and pitching depth is a question mark. Lack of experience also worried Scott in the pre-season, as they have only one senior. But they should hit well, led by Iman, Brinkly and Cole. The defense, especially in the infield, looks good. If the Pointers can find some pitching, they should do better.

Towson Generals

1993 record: 6-12. Coach: Bill Yosca.

Top players: Lee Murray, Sr., 3B; Mike Wellein, Sr., 1B; Mike Proctor, Sr., LF; Greg Gramiccioni, Sr., CF; Andy Matz, Sr., P/IF; Steve Beck, Jr., P.

Outlook: The Generals lost five starters to graduation, but they have some good replacements. Speed, experience and hitting look good, as does outfield defense. Pitching looks foggy so far. If the Generals can get solid defense all around and some good starting pitching, they'll come closer to the right side of .500.

Towson Catholic Owls

1993 record: 0-11. Coach: Dan McIntyre.

Top players: Ed Yodris, Sr., SS; David Lewis, Sr., 3B; Brad Cox, Jr., CF; Justin Lynam, Sr., C.

Outlook: With several returning players that have more experience, the Owls should do better. The team's defense should be a big plus, but the hitting and pitching appear questionable to new coach McIntyre.

Woodlawn Warriors

1993 record: 1-16. Coach: Scott Jeffery.

Top players: Ralph Gaston, Sr., 1B/P; Jai Shin, Jr., P/IF; Billy Martin, So. IF/ P; Damon Dennis, Jr., IF; Marc Diggs, Jr., OF.

Outlook: The Warriors should do better this season, as many of the losses last year were close. The team has some good defense and hitting and lots of speed. Jeffery said he has some good arms on the mound, but they need to throw strikes consistently. Good pitching will help the Warriors move closer to .500 this season.
