25 Years Ago (Week of March 2-8, 1969):

* The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Company upgraded its fleet of firefighting equipment with the purchase of a $37,000 pumper truck. The new truck is capable of pumping 1,000 gallons of water per minute. 50 Years Ago (Week of March 5-11, 1944):

* A sewing machine clinic was held at the Grange Hall in Highland. Residents could bring in their sewing machines to be cleaned, adjusted or repaired. The event was sponsored by the Agricultural Extension Service.

* The Howard County Freezer Locker Cooperative purchased the Hardman Tourist Home at the corner of Frederick Road and St. John's Lane for the site of the county freezer locker. In addition to the tourist home, the 11-acre parcel contained two barns, a dairy and a poultry house. Remodeling was scheduled to begin within a few weeks.
