Florida A&M; ousts Coppin, 82-57


Cindy Robinson scored a game-high 25 points on 11-for-15 shooting from the field, and second-seeded Florida A&M; defeated seventh-seeded Coppin State, 82-57, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's tournament first-round game yesterday at Morgan State's Hill Field House.

The Eagles (6-21) trailed Florida A&M; (18-9) at halftime, 36-24, and shot only 28 percent (12 of 43) in the second half.

Frances Rene Doctor and Stephanie Ready both came off the bench to lead the Eagles with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Florida A&M; plays Howard in the semifinals tomorrow at 2 p.m.

S.C. State 71, UMES 35

Four South Carolina State players scored in double figures as the top-seeded Bulldogs (23-4) routed eighth-seeded UMES (4-22) in the first round.

Allison Cooper led the Bulldogs with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

South Carolina State plays North Carolina A&T; tomorrow at noon.

Howard 77, Beth.-Cookman 68

Annette Lee scored 35 and Danique Graves added 21 as Howard topped Bethune-Cookman in the first round.

Lee and Graves also grabbed 12 and 11 rebounds, respectively, forthe Bison (14-13). Sherrie Jackson scored 16 and Bobby Floyd added 15 for Bethune-Cookman (8-18).

N.C. A&T; 73, Delaware St. 57

Freshman Nisha Watson scored 18 and had nine rebounds as fourth-seeded North Carolina A&T; defeated fifth-seeded Delaware State.

Jackie Campbell led all scorers with 19 for Delaware State (8-19). Four players scored in double digits for the Aggies (17-10).
