* 8-year-old boys -- There were many upsets in the first two rounds of the Howard County Youth Program playoffs this past weekend.
In Green Division action, Miami opened with a come-from-behind victory over Georgetown, rallying from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to win, 22-18. Tim Brackney and Evan Calvert combined for all of Miami's points, while Greg Manning and Robert Truax combined for 16 points for the Hoyas.
In the other first-round game, Tim McNulty hit an 18-foot jumper with 43 seconds left to give LSU a 16-15 upset over third-seeded Georgia Tech. McNulty and Kevin McDermott teamed for 12 points, while J. J. Marchany scored 13 to lead the Yellow Jackets.
In their next games, however, the two first-round winners had mixed results.
McNulty scored a game-high 14 points -- including 12 in the first half -- to lead LSU to a 21-12 upset of second-seeded Maryland. Adam Rones, McDermott, Garrett Ryan and Chris Meachum also contributed on offense.
Miami, though, lost to UCLA, 15-8. The Bruins used their aggressive defense, led by David Schnorf, Matt Garbark and Christopher Nithianandam, to silence the Hurricanes' offense. Jimmy Zabel took care of matters on offense, scoring nine points.
In Grey Division action, Matthew Schoenfelder scored a game-high 24 points to lead Notre Dame to a 27-18 upset over Boston College. Jonathan Dupski, Bob Pencek and Drew Warren also paced the Irish, while Reed Chilton, Thomas Roth and Andrew Porter led the way for the Eagles.
In the other first-round game, Villanova turned back N.C. State, 12-6. Peter Perantonakis, Joshua Plaxen, Jeff Carr and Jon Paul Kelley paced the Wildcats.
But Villanova then picked up its first loss against Duke in the second round. Led by the inside-outside combination of Wylie Gunn and Alex Tack (who combined for 10 points), the Blue Devils won, 16-11.
In the other second-round game, unheralded Notre Dame continued to make waves. Again led by Schoenfelder (16 points), the Irish handled second-seeded Virginia, 24-11. Joe Damiamo, Nathan Carrick and Matthew Cox also played well for the victors.
The playoffs in both divisions continue this weekend.
* 9-year-old boys -- James Davis scored 10 points and J. R. Bilney added six as Maryland scored a 30-19 win over Boston College for its second victory of the season in the Howard County Youth Program 9-year-old Midget Division. Mike Taneyhill led Boston College with eight points and Danny Mellendick added three.
Georgetown rebounded from last week's defeat with a 52-25 win over Duke; UCLA upset Notre Dame, 24-13; North Carolina State beat LSU, 23-16, and first-place Miami defeated Georgia Tech, 28-11.
* 10-and-under girls -- In the Howard County Youth Program's Major Girls League, LSU beat Michigan State, 33-27; UCLA defeated Maryland, 33-20 and 33-18; Virginia scored wins over N.C. State, 25-19, and LSU, 39-12; Maryland edged UCLA, 25-24; Georgia Tech handled Boston College, 29-14; Michigan State edged N.C. State, 37-33, and Notre Dame dominated Duke, 35-6.
* 8-year-old girls -- Brittany Kompare had eight points and three steals to lead Michigan over Villanova, 12-9, Saturday in the Western Howard County Youth Basketball League.
Samantha Fobbs and Jessica Rafferty also added two points each for the victors, while Catherine McKenzie and Clare Herlihy contributed with strong rebounding and Susan Monheit with superb defense.
Amber Fadrowski led Villanova with a game-high nine points and Agatha Horning and Christine Juras added solid rebounding and defense.
* 8-9 boys -- One undefeated team remains in The Supreme Sports Club Basketball League. With a 15-12 win over the Junior Lakers this past weekend, the Junior Heat improved to 7-0 in the 8-9 League. Ryan Eby scored seven points and David Freund added six to pace the Heat, while Timmy Wu (five) and Steve Bacon (four) led the Lakers (4-5).
The Junior Bulls (3-4) defeated the Junior Sonics, 12-3, as Lemuel Taylor scored six. Kyle Robinson scored two to pace the Sonics (0-7).
The Junior Magic improved to 5-2 with a 33-8 win over the Junior Knicks. Anthony Gaither scored 20 to lead the victors, while Winston Phipps led the Knicks (2-5) with four.
* 10-12 boys -- The Wolverines improved to 5-2 with a 27-23 win over the Spartans. Wintley Phipps II led all scorers with 17 points, while Sean LeDonne scored 15 to pace the Spartans (5-2).
The Irish also improved to 5-2 with a 42-28 win over the Huskies. Chris Wirth and Stefan Pastor each scored 10 to lead the victors, while Kevin Chrapaty scored 11 and Thurston Hamilton added nine for the Huskies (2-5).
Tye Hinds scored nine points to lead the Wildcats (1-6) to their first win, 27-19, over the Tar Heels. Bill Martinez paced the Tar Heels (3-4) with seven points.
* 13-15 boys -- Tari Mitchell scored 24 points and Dawud Wallace added 18 to lead the Sonics to a 78-43 win over the Warriors. Also for the Sonics (3-4), Senghor Shabazz scored 14, Sergio Fuentes had 12 and Antonio Goodman added 10. Ellwood Greene scored 17 to pace the Warriors (2-5), while Jason Gibson added 10.
Donald Wallace II scored 23 points and Gamaal Robinson added 20 as the Suns defeated the Knicks, 78-71. Chris Ralph also had 19 and Corey Davis 10 for the Suns (4-3). Marc Alston scored a game-high 29 points for the Knicks (3-4), while Phil Mackey had 14 and Dwayne Hines added 12.
The Blazers improved to 4-3 with a 63-52 win over the Heat. Troy Hines (28 points), Keilan Mathews (18) and Jake Culbartson (15) led the victors, while David Murrell scored 13 and Nick Sfakianos added 12 to pace the Heat (5-2).
* 9-year-old boys -- Top-seeded Notre Dame ran its record to 9-0 over the weekend with a 38-10 win over Maryland in the Western Howard County Youth Basketball League Tournament.
Bobby Clark and Alex Strewig paced the Irish with eight points each, as every Notre Dame player scored. Maryland got a strong game from Richard Mazzarino.
Second-seeded West Virginia also advanced with a 30-19 win over Syracuse. Kevin Furlough led West Virginia with 15 points and Robert LaHayne added five. Jayme Hamilton scored nine points in a losing cause.
Third-seed Virginia suffered a loss to sixth-seed Duke, 26-20. Eric Knight (14 points) and Zack Jenkins (eight) paced the victors, while Brandon Mellot (eight points) and Chris Vaziri (six) led Virginia.
Fifth-seeded Villanova defeated fourth-seeded Boston College, 36-23. Andrew Mecchi scored 17 and David Stepp 11 to lead Villanova. Boston College was led by Greg Sauer with seven points.
* 9-10 girls -- West Virginia continued its flawless season with a 16-8 win over Villanova. Rashida Walcott paced the offense with eight points and got plenty of support from Fana Walcott, Stephanie Dawson and Amy Larrimore. Jenny Gilbert and Amanda Larkin played well on defense.
Kristen Goetz had her strongest offensive game of the season for Villanova, scoring six points. Megan Shipley, Carlye Fyfe and Janice Rollyson also played well.
Michigan needed a second-half rally to hold off Texas, 20-16. Alexandra Clark scored a season-high 10 points for the victors, while Lori Wasilewski, Sandra Glinka, Beth Loveland and Lindsay Lewis also contributed on offense. Point guard Suzanne Thrasher and Lindsay Lewis also played well.
Rachel Hoyle and Jacqueline Crumrine led a balanced scoring attack for Texas with four points each. Tiffany Cheyne, Julie Butler, Rebekah Hull, Kristi Johnson and Amanda Moreland also scored, and Christine Beitler played well on defense.
Stephanie Simpson made the game-winning basket as time was winding down to lead Tennessee over Virginia, 12-11.
Elizabeth Shields, Katie Dugan and Ashley Haynes also scored for the victors. Beth Hunt and Susan D'Angelo led Tennessee's pressing defense, and Catherine Currano had several key rebounds.
Bridget Willet and Erin Reilly led Virginia's offense. Tara Fadrowski, Rosanna Drake, Stephanie Ballentine and Allisone Tarricone also played well.
* 10-and-under girls -- The Columbia Terrapins (5-2) got eight points each from Sarah Hobart and Tanae Jenifer en route to a 30-16 victory over Severna Park Sunday in the Arbutus Travel League.
Other scorers for Columbia included Rashida Walcott (four), Missy Moore and Charity Stone (three each), and Sarah Costa and Shanee Johnson (two each).
Indoor soccer * Under-10 boys -- The Western Howard County Thunder came big in two games over the weekend, winning by a combined score of 22-9 in the Eldersburg Super Sports League.
On Saturday, the team scored a 6-3 win over the Earthquake, as Matt Tedrow scored three goals and Matt Boras added two. Peter Bythrow led the way on defense and Christopher von Rautenkrantz played a strong game in goal.
The Thunder then completed an undefeated season on Sunday with a 16-6 win over the Spirit. Tedrow led the way with six goals, Boras had three and Shane Baxter and Joey Myers had two each.
Matt Degner and Jason Bostron played strong games on defense for the victors.
