The Washington Redskins waived wide receiver Tim McGee yesterday to save his $1.3 million salary and keep the team under the new $34 million salary cap.

It was the second straight day the Redskins have put a veteran free agent they signed last year on waivers to cut their payroll. On Monday, they waived linebacker Carl Banks, who would have earned $1.5 million this year.

The next Redskins veteran to be cut will be center Jeff Bostic, who is due to make $850,000 this year. Bostic will be waived when the Redskins sign their next free agent, probably tight end Ethan Horton of the Los Angeles Raiders.

The Redskins used the $2.8 million they saved to sign linebacker Ken Harvey of the Phoenix Cardinals yesterday to a four-year, $11 million deal averaging $2.75 million a year.

The Redskins, though, will have to count $400,000 of the $600,000 signing bonus Banks got last year toward this year's salary cap because they cut him. McGee got a $500,000 reporting bonus, but not a signing bonus.

The Redskins are continuing to bring in free agents for visits. Wide receiver Haywood Jeffires of the Houston Oilers and offensive lineman Ian Beckles of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers visited yesterday and two of Harvey's former teammates in Phoenix, defensive lineman Reuben Davis and running back Larry Centers, are scheduled to visit today.

Defensive end Brent Williams of the New England Patriots will visit tomorrow. Offensive lineman Trevor Matich of the Indianapolis Colts is set to be at Redskin Park Friday.
