Supporters of a new Redskins stadium in Laurel spent 45 minutes with Gov. William Donald Schaefer yesterday, and one said the "cordial, upbeat" meeting ended with the governor reaffirming his commitment to bringing football to Baltimore.

"I am pleased to tell you that as I went down my agenda of reasons as to why the stadium would be good for Laurel, he didn't disagree with one," said D. Craig Horn, a former Laurel city councilman who heads Citizens for a Planned Stadium in Laurel.

Mr. Horn told the governor that a Laurel stadium would encourage economic development and boost civic pride.

He said he and Lynn Class, the group's vice chairman, came to Annapolis "to ask the governor for his guidance and his support."

Mr. Schaefer, he said, "was firm in his commitment to continue seeking a pro football franchise for Baltimore" but told the group "to keep doing what we're doing."

Two weeks ago, Mr. Schaefer spent 45 minutes with Citizens Against the Stadium II, whose members oppose Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke's plan to build a 78,600-seat stadium in Laurel.
